Hey everyone,

I just met with Shreyasi and we talked about starting a Professional Development Monthly Lunch. This had been a tradition in EEB and it was scrapped about two years and they are thinking about bringing it back with us included. Topics we discussed could be: communicating science to the general public, effective presentation skills, how to apply for Post-Docs/other fields, and effective teaching practices. Obviously, there are many other options as well. Usually, we would invite someone in the department who specializes in the topic at hand to lead the discussion, but overall the idea is to keep it very informal and get everyone talking. Shreyasi is also going to be make a google Doc/Drive where we add additional sources and keep the conversation going. She is also going to talk to Susan to see if we can funding for lunches at this event (similar to journal club).

So two things here:

1.) Do all of you think is a good idea? Why or why not?
2.) What day would work best? Tuesday or Friday?

I figured I'd talk to all of you first before bringing it up to the entire department.

Best,
-Thomas

I think this is a great idea. The only problem I foresee is finding
enough guest speakers to fulfill a monthly basis.

I think that's a valid concern, but we could also self/group-lead as well.

I think it is a great idea, and I have the same concern as Amy. Who would be in charge of organizing it and inviting speakers?

Shreyasi and I envisioned it would be sort of group organized at the start of each semester. Topics could be discussed, ideal speakers thought of, and certain people would volunteer to recruit them for the respective events.

8 days later, but here’s my input:

I like the idea! But I think it should be infrequent, perhaps once a month? I like Friday over Tuesday, because we sometimes have Vanzant on Tuesday, or have to move journal club to Tuesday because Vanzant was scheduled on a Thursday. Also, it’s the end of the week so people might be winding down an experiment then, as opposed to starting them up on Tuesday.
