Hi All,

Some of you might have spotted that BarCampBrighton4 has popped up on
upcoming and on barcamp.org with the date of 5th & 6th September.

This is thanks to Ollie Glass (cc'd) who came forward today and said
he was keen to help make it happen. Ollie does a lot of work with the
University and should be able to ensure we have some more
student/academic participants.

It's a long way off but I've been making sure the University hold the
venue for this date to coincide with dConstruct. After BarCampOxford
decided to clash with BarCampBournemouth last weekend it makes sense
to get the date out there as early as possible to try and avoid the
same happening again.

There is also a plotting and planning meeting set for 5th May, would
be great to see a few of you there:
http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/2374137/

If anyone wants to run any smaller BarCamp style events (or even run a
BarCampBrighton before this one) I'd be very happy for The Skiff to be
used. Provided I'm around, I don't have any problem with it being a
real overnight camp too. I think it would be safe to issue up to 60
tickets for such an event with the expectation that ~45 people would
turn up and 15ish would stay over.

Best,

Jon.

Hi all,
I can't make it tonight, but I'm certainly keen to be involved in
helping with BCB4.

If tonight someone decides to take on the role of arranging
mini-sponsors for the event, then I'd be happy to share any nuggets of
wisdom that I gained from doing this at the last BarCamp.

Have a good meet,
Prem

Hi,

I was hoping to attend tonight, but its not looking practical today now unfortunately. Like Prem, please pass my details on to anyone thinking of looking at sponsorship and I'd be happy to meet up with them to pass on the contacts and give advice, as Jay did with me last year.

Kind regards,

Mark

Hi All,

I was also looking forward to attending, but I am caught up at work in the InQbate space. I can assist with technical issues related to the event and I was hoping to get some sort of dialogue going with Jon and others regarding potential use of the InQbate space at the University.

Have a good session tonight everyone.

Could not make the meeting, not sure I can make the 'camp either.
But I think Jon has my 4 WRT54G routers that can be used for the wifi again...

Hi all,

thanks to everyone who made it last night and posted their interest
here, it's good to get the ball rolling. It would be helpful if all of
us interested in volunteering could meet together soon. Is everyone
free on Thursday evening next week?

Cheers,

Ollie

As for the last couple of brighton barcamps, I'm more than happy to turn up early in the morning (or even night before) and help out, but will likely not make it to any planning meetings due to not being in Brighton :).

Hi All and Ollie,

I could be available next Thursday to get together. as I mentioned in an earlier strand, I am keen to look at the potential use of InQbate where I work to act as a starter and conclude to BC.

Can email you later on this week to confirm - if we get other numbers?

Hi all and Hessan,

to make another BarCamp viable we will need at least 4 volunteers,
both at an early stage to work on securing sponsorship, and nearer the
event to manage the logistics. Until we have that commitment, I
suggest we put plans for BarCampBrighton 4 on hold. Thanks to everyone
again for expressions of interest so far.

Best wishes,

Ollie

Hi,

I was at the meeting on the 5th, and I'm interested in helping out.

How much time do you think it will involve? I have a full-time job
Monday-Friday but I have some time to help out and my not-for-profit
company is happy that I'm involved. I don't know how much that would
count towards your requirement for 4 people?

There's a BarCamp this weekend "Mobile Tech 4 Social Change"
http://m4changelondon.eventbrite.com/

..on a bank holiday weekend!?

Anyway, I noticed that they are charging admission, which made me
think...

To me a BarCamp seems to be about empowering a community to meet and
discuss what they want to. Empowerment is often about taking
responsibility and being pro-active - Doing It Yourself. And yet if
the
event entirely depends on sponsorship it feels a bit like we are at
the
behest of external organisations.

So my thought was this, how about a funding compromise - The absolute
bare minimum costs that have to be met for the event to happen at all,
these could be met by admissions fees (this could be the 2-3K for the
venue, for example). The rest, the food, drinks etc, we fund raise
for.

Cheers,

Alan

I was on holiday when the planning meeting happened; what's the
current situation? No volunteers at all bar offers of help on the day?

Hi All,

We have a venue a date and 50% of the bare minimum sponsorship
required so much of the hard stuff is done already. We've got 15
weeks to get everything together which is more than twice the amount
of time we'd need if we didn't have any of these things.

Those of us that have organised the event before are keen that one or
two new people step up to take the lead and put there own mark on the
event. If that doesn't happen BarCampBrighton4 probably won't be any
where near as good as previous events and the Brighton community may
find itself with a burnt out bearded individual to nurse. :)

Best,

Jon.

Hello all :-)

As discussed at the planning meeting, i am totally happy to help out in a big way for plotting, planning and organising for this one :-)
Sounds like a lot of the hard work is already done!

I'll volunteer for the sponsorship and microsponsorship side of things.
