BCPA Newsletter May 5, 2011

Recent and Upcoming Contests:

The 2011 National Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships were held
April 6 - 9 in Chalottetown, PEI.
Thanks to all the lifters who made the trip to represent BC this year.
Full contest results are posted at http://www.powerlifting.ca/nationals/2011/index.php

Our next contest is the 2011 Provincial Powerlifting and Bench Press
Championships, which will take place Sunday, June 12 at Jericho Hill
Centre in Vancouver. An entry form with full details is now available
at http://www.bcpowerlifting.ca/calendar/
The entry deadline is June 3.

Please note that it is a requirement to participate in Provincial
Championships, either as a lifter or as a designated volunteer, in
order to be eligible to go to Nationals the following year. (This is
in addition to setting a national qualifying total.) However,
regardless of whether you intend to go to Nationals next year or not,
we look forward to your participation at the Provincials. If you are
not competing, please contact me if you would like to volunteer.

Canada will be host to two World Championships this year! Moose Jaw,
SK will host the World Junior and Sub-Junior Championships August 30 -
September 4, and St. Catherines, ON will host the World Masters
Championships September 28 - October 2. If you wish to be a member of
Team Canada, you can find an application form at
http://www.powerlifting.ca/forms/team_canada_application.pdf

Unequipped Lifting:

The IPF has sanctioned a Classic Powerlifting World Cup, to be held in
Sweden June 12 - 17, 2012. This will be a raw/unequipped event.
Detailed technical rules will follow in due course, but it is our
belief that unequipped lifting will most likely rule out supportive
shirts, supportive singlets, knee wraps, and knee sleeves.

The CPU has decided to hold a 2011 Classic Nationals in St. John's,
NL, hosted by Jeff Butt sometime in November (exact date TBD). This
event will be held on a trial basis in order to gauge interest in
unequipped lifting, and so qualifying totals will be modest. (These
are still in the process of being finalized.) Competitors will also be
able to qualify with the standard qualifying totals by lifting
equipped. Lifters who compete in the 2011 Classic Nationals will have
first priority to go the Sweden in 2012.

At the BCPA Annual General Meeting in January, the members present
indicated a willingness to include a category for unequipped lifting
at some of our local contests on a trial basis, and so we will include
an unequipped category for powerlifting at the Provincial
Championships this year. This contest can also be used to qualify for
the Classic Nationals in St. John's.

The BCPA shall follow the CPU definition of unequipped:
“Unequipped” is defined as normal shoes, socks, under-garments, non-
supportive singlet, T-shirt, wrist-wraps and belt. All items must
conform to standard IPF Rules specifications. No other items are
allowed. (Note: should IPF rules subsequently define “unequipped”
differently, their definition shall override the above).

Best wishes,
Justin Gray
BCPA President

Further to this, a poster for the 2011 Provincials is now posted on
our calendar page at http://bcpowerlifting.ca/calendar/2011%20Provincials%20-%20revised.pdf
Special thanks to Bill You for donating his time to prepare this for
us. If you would like to promote powerlifting in your area, please
consider printing this poster and posting it at your training
facility.

I have had a few inquiries asking whether knee wraps or knee sleeves
are permitted in the raw/unequipped division at Provincials. No other
items other than those listed below are permitted, and so this
excludes both knee wraps and knee sleeves.

Kind regards,
Justin Gray
BCPA President
