BCPA Newsletter February 26, 2011

Winter Open:

The 2011 BC Winter Open took place Sunday, February 13 at Performance
Works in Vancouver. It was a great contest that drew a lot of
spectators and saw a lot of first-time lifters make their debut.
Results from the Winter Open are now posted at
http://www.powerlifting.ca/prov/bc/2011winter_open.htm

Thanks to all of the volunteers that came through for us to make this
event possible. Since we have many new members with the BCPA this
hear, I think it needs to be said that many of our volunteers are also
fellow lifters who step up to give back to the sport by helping out at
contests whenever they are not competing. They worked very hard to
make the contest run smoothly and efficiently, with loading plates all
day, and with looking out for the safety of the lifters. If you were a
competitor in this contest, they will be needing you to return the
favour the next time you are sitting out and they are competing. Our
organization is only as strong as its members.

Nationals:

The 2011 National Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships take
place March 30 - April 2 in Chalottetown, PEI. Those of you who
received an entry form from me should have sent it in by now. It needs
to be received by the contest organizers in PEI no later than Tuesday,
March 1. See
http://2011nationals.ca/cpu/ for more details about the Nationals as
they become available.

Provincials:

The 2011 BC Provincial Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships are
scheduled for Sunday, June 12 in Vancouver. See the calendar page of
our website for further details. The entry form will be posted at a
later date.

Records:

There are many provincial records pending from the Winter Open and
these are now posted at http://bcpowerlifting.ca/records/index.shtml
If you have set a record you need to submit a record application and a
record fee within 60 days if you wish it to stand. If you were one of
the lifters selected for a doping control sample at the Winter Open,
your record may be listed as pending a bit longer (until the results
come back negative).
Please direct any queries about records to our Records Chair, Warren
Orr.

Powerlifting-Friendly Gyms:

If you train at a powerlifting-friendly gym that is not one on our
list at http://bcpowerlifting.ca/links/index.shtml
send me some details about it. For the purpose of this list, a
powerlifting-friendly gym is one that has decent equipment and will
tolerate heavy deadlifting and the use of a modest amount of chalk.
(This does not mean that they will tolerate poor gym etiquette.)
Ideally, it is a gym where other powerlifters train, but this is not a
requirement.

Powerlifting Clubs:

In an effort to bring powerlifters together and to make our sport more
accessible to new lifters,
the BCPA is starting a clubs page on our website. For now, the only
criteria for starting a club is that it consist of at least three
members, all of whom are BCPA members in good standing. If you would
like to start a club, send me a club contact and a few details about
your club that I can list on our clubs page.

Kind regards,
Justin Gray
BCPA President
