Unable to request data from BCDA API

Hi BCDA Community,

I am currently facing an issue while requesting data from the BCDA API.

Below are the details of my request parameters:
Regular API Endpoint:
https://api.bcda.cms.gov/api/v2/Group/all/$export?_since={since_date}


Request Headers:
{
  "Accept": "application/fhir+json",
  "Authorization": "Bearer {access_token}",
  "Prefer": "respond-async"
}

I have successfully obtained the access token, but when I make the request to the API endpoint, I receive a 500 Internal Server Error.

Could you please help me identify the possible reasons for this error or suggest troubleshooting steps?

Dear Ashvani,

We just tried the following with the results as shown.

api/v2/Patient/$export?_type=Claim&_since=2025-05-26T14:03:00.000-00:00                       resulted in 202 return

api/v2/Patient/$export?_type=ClaimResponse&_since=2025-05-26T14:03:00.000-00:00   resulted in a 500 return

We have been puzzling on our '500' return code on the ClaimResponse type since Tuesday.

Following up on this ...

The successful submit for Claim resulted in two NDJSON files to download. The first one worked. We received a '500' when we tried to download the second one.

FWIW, BCDA seems very unstable this morning.

Hi all,

Thanks for your patience as we investigated this issue. There seemed to be an issue with one of the API instances causing only some of your requests to fail with a 500 response. We restarted the faulty instance and requests seem to be processing as normal. We'll continue our investigation to determine the root cause and reduce the likelihood of this occurring again.

If you haven't already, please retry your request and let us know the results.

And just a follow up from here ... The BCDA was working normally as of roughly 15:00 EDT yesterday. Our scheduled job runs at 3:00 EDT daily and was successful this morning.

For future reference, do we think that a '500' return code means 'ping the BCDA support desk'?
