Do you guys know about the new roller rink that was put on one of the old tennis courts and is next to the basketball practice facility?

Are we allowed to use the court though? It's been there for a while, or at least there was something like it before.

This looks very similar in size to the rink used by DC at rush rink. You all should jump on that and play there.

Honestly, I don't know why we wouldn't be allowed to use it.  Obviously we won't be able to use it when the hockey team is on it, but I say we check it out sometime.  Maybe Dalton, Browning and I will go check it out this weekend.

Not like they can claim that you're gonna damage the court. No more so than hockey players will. At least most of your things are made of plastic.

I'm down to play tomorrow, yesterday was disappointed to find no one
in the garage. Have got to start checking email right before..

The rink has got to be better than the garage, hope we try that out.

Okay so I emailed the President of the club to get some info about
maybe using the rink...here is what I got:

"Hi Dalton,

Since the rink is a VT Rec Sports facility only VT registered student
organizations can use it. If your group isn't, it's not very hard to
become one. You might want to look into it. My club also bought the
boards so we have a vested interest in protecting them. What is a
bike polo ball made out of? I'm also concerned that the bikes would
run into the boards and possibly damage them. Do you have your own
nets? We bought nice nets that are locked in our shed but we do have
an extra old pair that we could set outside the shed. I would also
require a donation from your group to use the boards since we are
still paying them off. A $500 donation would allow you to also have a
banner on the outside of the boards advertising your group, if you are
interested in raising interest in your sport.

Cory Bernhards
RHCVT President"

a) I would be down to look into making BBurg Bike Polo a student
organization, although I'm not really sure of that process.
b) fuck paying $500 for advertising?! I wouldn't mind donating to use
the court, but that seems a little steep

Opinions?

Tell him you all would do no more and no less damage to their precious boards. Again, DC bike polo runs the same set up. http://27.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lp2rs1TBsW1qjhivqo1_500.jpg
It's the same exact setup. And of course a bike polo ball is just a street hockey ball.

Can you follow up and ask him how much $ they want just for use of the
ring and not a banner? I think it may also be possible that the NRVBA
would donate some $ for use of the court because they're trying to
start a children's bike polo league. I'll ask 'em.

If the price isn't too bad (interested in the NRVBA option, worked with them before for "Bike Challenge" and they were cool) then creating a student organization is pretty easy I think unless we have missed some deadline. If that's the case, what about something like the free-ride club or some similar organization that would be willing to reserve it for us. We could also offer the hockey club some of our labor and have a work day if they have something that needs doing at the rink as opposed to paying a lot.

Agreed, and we wouldn't have been able to use it if we hadn't asked them about it.  I rode by today and the court is locked, so we'll need the combo to get in.  Looks like a perfect court though

if it's identical to Rush Rink in DC, it may be a tad small, but compared to your single tennis court in bburg it'll be awesome. I wonder how it compares to the rink next to the skatepark (probably close?). I'd work out a deal that at worst translates to 2 bucks a person per day used and work out so you all can use it whenever they are not.

I'll email him about a price per use, or a price without advertising
and mention that we would be willing to do some maintenance/upkeep
work. I say we talk to the free-ride club or a similar student
organization to see if we can use them as a "front" of sorts until we
can work out applying for a student organization. From what I
understand it is a pretty simple process as long as we aren't trying
to get money from the school, I'm just not sure about deadlines.

Are you guys seniors? Try to make the officers, especially the president, the people who will be at VT as students the longest. This makes renewal easier. I am not a student but I could probably be the faculty advisor if we need one. I’ll be here through next December most likely.

Me, Browning, and Matt are Juniors, so I figured we would be officers if that works for them. Hopefully we can find more students to play/replace us over time. We aren't required to have an advisor so that shouldn't be a big deal, might get one next year if we try to get funding or something.

Did anyone ever follow up with the roller rink thing?  Just rode by there and looks like a pretty sweet setup.  As Sprinks said, they have the same setup in DC and it's not worse for wear.  Official VT student group, throw 'em a couple bucks, do some cleanup on the court, and voila.

Yeah, as an outsider looking in, i'd say don't even mention cash unless it gets brought up by them, and even then, push for keeping it cheap as possible. Glad to hear you guys are looking back at that option. Maybe it'll make my next trip down to blacksburg that much more worthwhile. :D

"Red Paint of Death" (n):  The residue of red paint used on old asphalt tennis courts that, when wet, represent a real and present danger to bicycle wheels when operated at speeds in excess of 3mph or at angles of greater than 5 degrees deviation from vertical.  The typical result of contact with the Red Paint of Death is a circumstance commonly referred to as "ass over teakettle", "eating pavement", "endo", or an exclamation of "OooOoOOOooooh DAMN!" from onlookers.

Hope this cleared it up for you, Sprinks.

Back when polo was cool, and you were lucky to get in a couple games because of so many people showing up, we used to use the roller hockey court on Wednesday and Progress on Sunday. The roller hockey court is much smaller and is ideal for 2v2. 3v3 is doable but definitely not more. There was a group that had historically used the roller hockey rink for hockey on Sundays so we never tried to do it there on Sundays, plus with bigger attendance on Sunday, the larger court was ideal.

Doing a quick measurement on the maps, the length is actually pretty damn close. 32x15m for the hockey court and 30x16m for the abandoned court. I know the hockey court has those weird pad things as well, but truth be told, you all are playing tiny courts anyways and unless you all suddenly had access to a normal sized rink i'd play the one with a better surface. And why you're ever playing more than 3v3 is beyond me. :P

Yeah, not sure why I said that, must have been thinking of 2v3 like we often do now when only 5 peeps show up.  I don’t know how google polo would work, I just remember in real life, 3v3, that court gets cramped. It would, however, help improve on ball handling, defense, and passing skills a bit more than a big slap and run court like we have now.

$149 group rate for duct/dryer cleaning? something helpful for home safety.

We’re currently scheduling a dryer vent cleaning with Michael, and if a few more neighbors are interested, we can get a group discount. Normally this service costs $399, but with multiple homes it drops to $149 per home. Cleaning your dryer vent is really important because lint and dust buildup can become a serious fire hazard if not maintained properly. We’ve used this service before, and they do an excellent job. (They also offer duct cleaning and chimney cleaning if needed)

if anyone needs that as well. If you’re interested, please send me your availability, home address, and phone number via email, and I’ll add you to the list.
