Charter for Group bburg.business, and Frequently Asked Questions

Contents of this FAQ:
1. Charter for bburg.business.
2. Frequently asked questions about bburg.business.
3. Frequently asked questions about news.

1. CHARTER FOR BBURG.BUSINESS

As of $Date: 1998/07/29 09:41:19 $ this was the charter of this group.
If the readers feel a change is needed, please inform the news
administrator.

This newsgroup is intended for the discussion of business in and around
Blacksburg. Local businesses are welcome to answer questions, and post
information about their products and services, but should aware that this
group is not intended for wholesale commercial advertising.

2. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BBURG.BUSINESS

There is no FAQ list available for this group. However, if the residents
of this group would like to create one, the administrator would be happy
to arrange to include it in this periodic posting. Or, as time allows, if
the same questions start appearing regularly, a rudimentary one might be
created.

3. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NEWS.
In this section:
a) How do I create a new newsgroup?
b) How do I post to more than one newsgroup?
c) Where can I get further info on news?
d) Can I post anonymously?
e) Can I post binaries?
f) Who can I contact for assistance or questions?

A) HOW DO I CREATE A NEW NEWSGROUP?

A thorough discussion belongs elsewhere; if it's a local newsgroup,
like vatech.* or bburg.* then visit the vatech.config or bburg.config
newsgroups and suggest it. You'll need a charter, and people to
support it. If it's another local newsgroup, visit that hierarchies
*.general or *.config, (if they have one) newsgroup and suggest it.
See the FAQ in vatech.config or bburg.config for more details. If it's
one of the main usenet hierarchies, see the rules in the "How to
create" postings in the group "news.answers" for info.

B) HOW DO I POST TO MORE THAN ONE NEWSGROUP?

If you feel more than one group will benefit from a message, please don't
post it to them all seperately; most news readers can tell if someone
"cross-posted" if they post them all at ONCE, but not if you post them
seperately. (Messages get individual serial numbers, is how.) See the
instructions with your reader. Generally you would just list ALL the
newsgroups when telling it where to post, i.e. "bburg.general,bburg.config"

C) WHERE CAN I GET FURTHER INFO ON NEWS?

See the "vatech.news.admin" group and its FAQs for administrative info on
news in general, or "vatech.news.software" and its FAQs for info on news
software. If you don't see the answer, ask a question in those groups.
More pointers can be found there to other important news groups. Please
note that just because something isn't mentioned as appropriate or
in appropriate in these faqs doesn't mean that it is or isn't it just
means that it never occured to anyone to put it here. Please ask if
you aren't sure.

D) CAN I POST ANONYMOUSLY?

Anonymous posting is not allowed in the local news hierarchies; this
includes the vatech, csugrad, cray, and bburg groups. Users should always
use their correct email address in their newsreader when posting to these
groups. Anonymous posting is allowed in many other, but not all,
newsgroups. See the FAQ listings in news.announce.newusers for more info.

E) CAN I POST BINARIES?

You may post binaries in any appropriate binaries newsgroup; these
are generally in alt.binaries.*something*, although there are some in
the national group hierarchies (jp, de, fr, etc). Binaries are against
the posting policies for local newsgroups at this time, due to the
amount of space they consume. Putting them on a web page, or posting
them to a real binaries group, and putting a pointer in the local
group saying where to get them are the preferred methods.

F) WHO CAN I CONTACT FOR ASSISTANCE OR QUESTIONS?

Ideally post your questions to vatech.news.admin. If you can't, you can
send email to newsm...@va.edu. More people will have the opportunity
to respond to a public posting, however.
