My thoughts on exit policy.

Hi All,

My thoughts on exit policy are shared below (hopefully with brevity😀).

 - An exit should never be considered profitable in any way and should also be irreversible since it would be too cumbersome to allow the person to rejoin say after a year. We came together with some ideals and stepping out is simply a personal choice. Having said that, exits are neither expected nor are we prepared to handle exits. 

 - A Monetary payout brings about a conclusiveness to the exit and thus preferred. We have already concurred that an amount of 5 lakhs is fair and we should stick to this for Gopi and Anil K. It has been a long time since their exit and it is fair that we pay out an initial amount (of perhaps two lakhs each) to them as soon as possible (perhaps before Dec 2020) and plan to pay the rest over a longer period that we can discuss and agree on. We cannot make a commitment of course since BBT's operational activities should take priority over this payout. A payout of 4 lakhs before Dec 2020 is not easy for sure but I think we can manage this considering that some amount is due to the pool.

Now that we have addressed the immediate issue at hand. We need to start addressing couple concerns raised from the remaining team

-- What our goal: 

Is it organic, natural or we do what we want and what suits us at that point of time. 

Is it conservation 

-- Protecting the land in everyone's names : Trust was proposed, many disposed , no conclusion was arrived.

-- Is it community driven approach, or individual 

-- What are the boundaries of operations, is it money : If one can spend, are they allowed 

-- How is the call taken on any activity ? is it money at hand or belief is on hands on? 

-- Do we want all work done from outsiders and be landlords or we plan to have some learnings . .(For me I will continue hands on. it may be slow, but good learning)

-- Is there an upper cut off on how much we spend on man and machine from outside. ?

Well above was what was planned in the trust framework. Any other workable alternative is fine.

[Sandy] For me, the goal is to try and grow what we can eat in a safe way (apart from the incidental benefits like a huge playground etc :-) ). My credentials with respect to farming is obviously limited and by 'safe', I simply mean to say that it should be safer than other options I've to procure food. :-)

Is it conservation 

[Sandy] Definitely and it should be beyond conserving in fact. Protecting what we have and creating more resources is my goal and I think we have done fairly well in the past 8 years.

[Sandy] A feasible trust was never proposed and thus many disposed of. 

 

-- Is it community driven approach, or individual 

[Sandy] I don't get this question/statement frankly. 

 

-- What are the boundaries of operations, is it money : If one can spend, are they allowed 

[Sandy] No. There has to be a consensus on spending if one intends to get reimbursed :-). Having said this, I do remember that during one of our annual budgeting meetings, we had concurred that an individual can spend on certain things upto a certain limit (I think we agreed on 1000/-?...not sure.

 

-- How is the call taken on any activity ? is it money at hand or belief is on hands on? 

[Sandy] Do you have any specific activity in mind? Let me cite activities initiated by me as examples. I bought sandal wood saplings since there was an opportunity to buy the best saplings available and yes, this cost money. We did not meet and concur that I was allowed this spend. So this falls under 'money at hand'. The tree house was another thing I initiated which did not involve money. Perhaps you need to elaborate on your query for clarity.

[Sandy] Living off the land is simply not practical and I'm at best a weekend farmer. Keeping BBT operational without having hired help is simply impossible in my opinion.

[Sandy] We can decide on this cut off for sure.
