Join ANAR DANA over the course of the next month  as we explore 3 cultures and their changing national experiences and identities following the fall of the Ottoman Empire during World War I.

January 11th, 2026 we will begin with the emerging Turkish idendity, particularly of the Zeybek Culture of Aegean Turkey, through the Turkish War of Independence and the formation of national culture
following the founding of the Turkish Republic.

January 18th, 2026 we will continue with the Armenian people, their loss of homeland and genocide and their multi-faceted diaspora experiences with special attention on the Armenian diaspora communities in Fresno, California.

February 15th, we will further deepen our understanding by focusing on the the Greek population after the Turco-Greco exchange of of populations (particulary from the region of Aegean Turkey that we discussed in the Zeybek Cultural Talk) and the refugees' adjustment to the new realities in mainland Greece.  We will explore how this is reflected in the  developent of the musical genre of Rebetiko.

Each of these ANAR DANA Cultural Talks is a stand-alone lecture, but taken all together will provide a truely profound understanding of the region and its diasporas.

Greek Rebetiko
Sunday, February 15, 2026
18:00 CET/14:00 AR/9:00am PT
ONLINE

Our theme is the Greek music and dance genre of Rebetiko. The 1923 Greek-Turkish population exchange was a compulsory transfer of over 1.6 million people between Greece and the new Turkish Republic after the fall of the Ottoman Empire.  Many destitute musicians ended up in Greek harbor cities. They brought with them both European, Anatolian Ottoman café music which in the 1930s  developed into a more distinctive genre of urban Greek popular music of the poorest classes, from the late 19th century to the 1950s. Rebetiko was partly forgotten and later was rediscovered in the rebetika revival of the 1970's.

Our theme is the improvisational urban social dance in pre-revolutionary Iran.  Kereshme or Naz “flirting” or “acting coquettishly” is perhaps the most important characteristic of the urban social dances of Iran.  We will trace urban dancing in Iran from the imperial courts of the Safavids and Qajars, to the urban dances before the 1979 Islamic revolution including the foundation of the Mahallah Dance ensemble and the creation of neo-classical Persian dance.
