Dear friends,
This week, we pause to acknowledge the anniversary of David Nadel Week, first
proclaimed by the City of Berkeley in January 1997 as a time of special remembrance and reflection.
David Nadel was honored by the City of Berkeley as a tzaddic—a righteous person—for
his lifetime of principled activism and unwavering commitment to peace, social justice, and human rights. A deeply committed political activist, David believed that life ought to be lived in service to one’s values, and he shared that belief generously with
his community.

Through his leadership at Ashkenaz and his support for more than 250 causes,
David fostered a culture of generosity, inclusion, and cultural exchange. Ashkenaz became not only a center for music and dance, but also a vital gathering place rooted in safety, respect, and international cultural tradition. His advocacy extended beyond
the arts—he stood firmly for democratic participation, peace, and community self-determination, even in the face of profound personal risk.

The City’s proclamation recognized both the tragedy of David’s death and the
enduring power of his life’s work. While senseless violence took him from us, it did not take away the values he embodied or the community he helped build. The years of shared experiences, creativity, and connection at the House of Whole World Dance Music
remain forever precious.

As Berkeley declared then—and as we affirm now—David Nadel Week is a call
to action. It urges all of us to continue working for peace, social justice, and respect for human rights, and to honor David’s memory not only in words, but in how we show up for one another.
May this anniversary be a time of remembrance, gratitude, and renewed commitment.
With respect and resolve,
Your Friends at Ashkenaz Music & Dance
