I will often have several text windows with dozens of documents open.
I'd like to be able to clearly distinguish the remote documents from
the local documents (italic, bold, color, anything). I like to close
remote documents at the end of a coding session, and I dislike
clicking through all the open documents to find them.

As a bonus, it would be cool to color code document names from
different projects (or from different locations).

Wow, that's a good idea.

Use case: Today a client asked me to make a change to a live website. I opened the relevant files on my local copy of the website, tried a few things, figured out the best way to implement the change, opened the versions of the same files on the server, and copied various blobs of text from one to the other.

(As I type this, I am aware that it's not the most awesomely rigorous process, but I think most of us live on the edge sometimes, right?)

Anyway, you can see how a quick visual cue as to whether I'm in the local or the remote version of a file would be helpful during this process.

I would also love to see this feature. (Yes it is living dangerously
in the first place.. but we often do.. thus the desire for the visual
help ;-)

There are a couple of existing visual cues for documents opened via
SFTP: the large BBEdit document icon next to the "i" button on the
tool bar is absent; less helpfully, the document icon itself is subtly
different. If you want to close all the open files on the remote
SFTP server, you can do it via AppleScript: close documents whose
"is sftp" property is true.
