Make your rectangular selection. Then, instead of typing along, invoke the "Prefix/Suffix Lines" command from the "Text" menu. One step more, but it allows for a more powerful interaction if you want to change existing text (e.g. to add tags around it).

See page 87 of the manual. Make a rectangular selection of the column you want to insert text into and use Prefix/Suffix lines.

I just did with no problems:




It's not as magical as watching multiple lines get live-edited at once, but it works.
