javascript alert not showing up in bbedit (BBEdit 13.1 on mac)

I've upgraded to BBEdit 13.1 and now, when I have an alert in a javascript function, it doesn't work when I test the page in BBEdit.
However, if I test the same page with Chrome or Safari the alert functions as expected.
What is happening here? I'd appreciate an explanation because the alert is a vital part of my javascript debugging strategies.

Meanwhile, please note that the preview window's web inspector
(the magnifying glass in the bar above the web view) is the same
as what Safari offers, including JavaScript debugging and a console.
