[mac] How to get read aloud features to work?

I press a shortcut on most apps and my computer starts reading aloud the selection.

On bbedit it only reads aloud the *title of the document* and "free mode".

There is another trick involving zooming in the screen and the computer reads the zoomed in selection, but that only reads the title of the document.

The "Start Speaking" command on the Edit menu should do the job.
It will read the selected text; or if there is no selection, the
entire document.

Yup. BBEdit -> Preferences -> Menus & Shortcuts -> Edit -> Start/Stop Speaking 

Double click on the "none" to the right of "Start/Stop Speaking", and then choose your key chord.
