Just curious -- has anyone else noticed a definite typing slowdown in BBEdit 10 with TextExpander enabled? I haven't noticed it consistently, but today things were very laggy in typing, and after trying a few different things -- removing a custom completion file I'd been playing with, doing the ol' Windows-esque trick of quitting and restarting everything -- I discovered that the lagginess largely went away when I disabled TextExpander.

It looks like even with TE turned off, BBEdit doesn't keep up if I'm just typing random letters as fast as I can, but it keeps up with my normal typing speed (mostly). With TE turned on, though, the lag is pretty visible. Programs using the "native" text controls (i.e., TextEdit) don't exhibit this.

This is with 10.0.2, builds 3081 and 3085.

Yes, in fact it was so bad for me I had to disable TextExpander.
But it started for me back under early betas of 10.0, I think,
so I've (sadly) had TE disabled for quite a while.

I also noticed it in the browser, especially when using
browser-based gMail.

What language(s) are you working in when you see these
slowdowns? (or doesn't it make a difference?)

I've found it in many applications, not just BBEdit. What I've done is
set a hot key for enabling/disabling expansion and only turn it on
when absolutely necessary, which kind of limits the usefulness of TE.
I've had the problem in BBEdit, TextMate, TeXShop, Safari, and
Mailplane that I can recall.

I've known of other people with this problem. It may be an
incompatibility of TE with another application (such as a clipboard
utility).

I'm wondering if some people added another application around the same
time they upgraded to BBEdit 10 and that's what's causing the TE
problems.

Cheers,

Tim.

I started finding TextExpander too buggy to fool with about a year ago, and the devs were not responsive to my reports.  For that reason and for the far superior QuickSearch I moved to Typinator (after having spent about 20 years using TypeIt4Me).

Typinator doesn't seem to have the problem you describe.

Hmm.  I'm not seeing that.  BBEdit 10.0.2 (3085) is keeping up when I just bang the keyboard.

It may be completely unrelated but I have experienced numerous
problems with TextExpander (delays leading to the reversal of initial
letters) and eventually switched away completely.

What seems to have been calling the problems in my case was the
installed versions of /Library/ScriptingAdditions/Adobe Unit
Types.osax. Once I updated these to 64-bit versions every ran more
smoothly. I thought I'd post this in case it's any use.

I am now changing from TextExpander to Typinator because for the couple of years I've used TextExpander it has always been problematic. I really like it in many ways but I'm fed up with it destroying its own "settings" file. I've been putting up with it because I think, maybe it is something about my particular situation and I've been a bit lazy to change over, but the experiences of others has given me the impetus to change.

I haven't noticed the "slowing down" with BBEdit that has been mentioned however.

I've also switched to Typinator. I really want to like Smile software,
as I like their company personality, but Typinator has been faster and
more stable for me. Worth giving it a try.

By all means, please contact us at support at smilesoftware.com. We'd
be happy to work with you to get to the bottom of this. I use BBEdit
10 myself all the time and have not encountered this issue. Odds are,
it's some sort of interaction or setting issue. Let's work together
and see if it's something we can fix. Our apologies for any interim
inconvenience.

In my case, the problem was Grammarian Pro2 X.(2.0.1) After the
reinstallation, the typing lag almost got away with BBEdit 10.0.1.
There is still a small typing lag when typing with auto completion,
but it’s much better now. And I use Typinator and PTHPasteboard.

Cheers
