Hello,
I am new to this BBEdit software. I have made a list of the race car numbers and drivers and I am able to rename the photo using the i button. However, when I Save and OK I have no idea where they are being saved? I also don't see that the caption below the photo has changed to the new caption. Isn't this supposed to happen? Lastly if I have 8 shots of an accident do I have to rename them individually or I can rename all of them at once? Please help and thank you.

Could you provide more details about your workflow? For example, what do you mean with your reference to "the i button"?

If you have a text file open in BBEdit, make changes to that file, and then save it, then your changes are preserved.

As for renaming photos, rather than do this in BBEdit, try selecting them in the Finder, and then calling up the contextual menu (AKA right click) and select "Rename …". Proceed as necessary.

Hello Greg,

Thank you for your response.

I am an auto racing photographer and I believe this program would be very helpful. I am using a Mac OS Catalina  10.15.7 and installed the BBEdit software. Unfortunately there are no step-by-step instructions so I tried going on YouTube to see if I could bet help. The videos I found are telling me to develop a Code Replacement file in BBEdit which I have done and saved the list in a Code Replacement folder. Then it tells me to go back to Photo Mechanic and open the file. This is where I get lost. I am able to select the CR file and open the photo in Photo Mechanic. I also am able to type the \Car #\ and the drivers name shows. However, I can’t gat the new caption to show below the photo and I can’t find where the photo has been saved. What am I missing?

Thank you for your help.

Sorry, Iam still not getting your workflow. It sounds as though your issue is with how Photo Mechanic works, not with anything BBEdit related.

Hi Greg,

I hope this workflow explanation will help.

Not really.

1) I've never used (or even heard of) Photo Mechanic.
2) I don't know the video to which you refer.
3)  I don't understand why clicking a button in PM would open BBEdit.
4) I don't understand how typing something in BBEdit (in a form, no less) precipitates a list lookup.
5) I don't understand where the results of the list lookup go.
6) I don't understand where the caption is, or for that matter, where the photo is. PM? An HTML page?

I will say that if you have a file open in BBEdit, you can get the info on that file and BBEdit will tell you the path to that file.

Also, if you know the name of the file (and PM doesn't store files in a database of some sort), you can use Spotlight to find where any given photo is on your hard drive.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

What videos? Can you post links?

Have you contacted the developers of Photo Mechanic and asked them how
to do what you're trying to do? If so, what was their response?

This seems to be part of the problem: BBEdit is a text editor, used for
writing computer code, among lots of other uses. But it doesn’t do
anything directly with photos or other image files.

Somehow, the Photo Mechanic guidance you’re getting is leaving out an
important piece of the process. I expect that your questions are better
directed to the Photo Mechanic support folks.

I looked at their intro video and didn’t see anything about BBEdit, so
that’s probably not the video you mentioned. But the gist of it is
that you would be opening photos in Photo Mechanic, browsing, culling,
and moving the photo files around. It’s Photo Mechanic that would be
doing any saving, and it appears to have settings for where files go
when you import (“ingest”) them.

Here’s a guess: Perhaps you’re trying to use Photo Mechanic to place
some photos online for others to view? I can see how they might suggest
using BBEdit for modifying/editing the website files (HTML), which is
one of BBEdit’s popular uses. But what BBEdit does is help you work on
the text files that are behind the web pages viewers see. In the HTML
code for web pages, it’s possible to place an image in a page and add
a caption for it. Am I getting warm?

Photo Mechanic appears to offer extensive capabilities to add and change
a photo’s meta-data (info such as where the photo was taken, the
equipment used, etc.). So, perhaps they offer some way to edit that
metadata with a text editor such as BBEdit, although that wouldn’t
normally be the way to provide a caption visible to viewers of the
photo.

People on this BBEdit list try to be helpful, but so far I think we’re
stumped as to what your exact problem is, and whether it’s with BBEdit
or something else.

Perhaps you could add some more information, without assuming we know
anything about Photo Mechanic. Can you quote from the instructions that
lead you to BBEdit? What’s your larger goal with the photo?

HTH,

- Bruce

Dick,

Your question looks more related to Photo Mechanic than to BBEdit and you might get a more informed help from the Photo Mechanic forum :

If you search for "BBEdit" there are a few posts.

Best regards,
