How do I convince BBedit 9.5 to NOT show invisibles on new docs and
old documents alike? I turned "Save state" OFF, I turned "Show
Invisibles" OFF in the preferences. I've even resorted to deleting all
preference files related to BBedit, and all old copies of BBedit...
nothing works. This is really irritating me.

I'm having precisely the same problem with BBEdit 9.3.1, but it's only
for html documents. My CSS and javascript documents open with
invisibles hidden, but my html documents always show tabs and line
returns. I have to turn them off in each file, one-at-a-time.

I have 'Save document state' turned off and 'Show invisibles' turned
off.

1. How do I keep this from occurring?

2. If it does occur, is there a way to turn off invisibles for all
currently opened files at once?

It's interesting that there would be a distinction between different
types of documents. I don't know about my CSS documents... I don't
work with them enough to notice a problem, but it certainly happens
with all of my HTML documents.

However when I go to FILE->NEW-> New document (any type -- from
clipboard, blank document, etc.), my new document always shows
invisibles by default. Even if the clipboard text isn't HTML.

Perhaps you've already checked these settings, but just in case, here's a rundown of all the options you have to work with:

1. The "Show Invisibles" checkbox on BBEdit's "Editor Defaults" preference pane sets the application-wide default for all new documents.

2. The application-wide default can be overridden on a per-language-basis using BBEdit's "Preferences -> Languages -> [desired language] -> Editing -> Show invisibles" checkbox.

3. Both of the aforementioned defaults can also be overridden on a per-document-basis using BBEdit's "View -> Text Display -> Show Invisibles" menubar command or the "Show Invisibles" command under the text options button in the toolbar.

Hope this helps.

Oh. My. God. Toadling, you are a hero! It was item #2 that fixed it.
The HTML language preferences were set to show invisibles. I would
NEVER have discovered that on my own, buried as it is (and I mean
BURIED) in the Languages pane. It's probably covered in the user guide
under "Languages," but it was not covered in the section on "Show
Invisibles", and it didn't come up in a search of 'show invisibles.'
This should definitely be changed.

BTW, one correction: In my version (9.3.1) the path to the preference
setting is Preferences -> Languages -> [desired language] -> Options -
> Editing -> Show invisibles" checkbox.

Thanks again! You've saved me a lot of time and annoyance.
