Extensive Horizontal Scroll?

Is there any reasoning behind the extensive available document horizontal scroll even if no text extends beyond the window boundary?  Seems odd to my eye.  Since most editors I'm used to don't show the horizontal scroll bar unless necessary, it indicates to me (too) long lines of code.

It’s a really really really long horizontal scroll too. What is it, about 200 clicks to get to the end?

I use a magic mouse and it's very frustrating when the text on screen
suddenly vanishes sideways...

I agree it is very frustrating, even on a Macbook trackpad

I have soft wrap checked in the Editor Defaults preference panel, so
I had not noticed this behaviour, which is obviously quite crazy.

I find that in most circumstances soft wrapping is most convenient
and it can be quickly be turned on or off in a window's T pop-up in
special circumstances.

This might be the best solution until Barebones get their act together again.

I generally prefer to work on code/HTML with soft wrap off, so I am getting very VERY annoyed with the side scrolling to 5000 columns behavior in BBEdit 10.

I turn off soft wrap when working on python scripts (so I can copy whole indented blocks and use %paste to drop them in an ipython sesson).  With my magic mouse, and moving to Lion, I am forever sliding the text off the screen.  VERY annoying.

I can see being able to scroll as far as the longest line in the file, but looking at columns 500-600 seems pointless.

That behavior was fixed in 10.1. Are you running current software?

I'm using 10.1 (3110) and the horizontal scrolling is much better.
However it still seems to be set much wider than needed.

For example, I have file with its longest un-wrapped line of 291
chars.
The horizontal scrolling gives me an additional space of about 100
more chars.

Is it possible to get just a 'gutter' on the right of the longest un-
wrapped line and not more?

On a similar note, I've been having problems with very long lines of
text (1,559 characters) - when command right arrow to the end of the
line I don't see the actual characters, even though the cursor is
correctly positioned. I have to soft wrap the text to get to that
data, and then turn off soft wrapping to continue with my work. I can
get the job done, but it's annoying to have to turn soft wrapping on
and off just to get to the end of a line.

I totally agree with Phil, here. I want to be able to command-right
arrow to see/get the end of the long lines. I re-read this whole
thread looking for an expert pref. or something to re-instate what
(IIRC) used to be different BBedit behavior. Right? I remember I
used to be able to see the ends of long lines, and now have to use
soft-wrap to see them. Anyone know another way, other than soft-wrap?

Thanks

Howdy Folks,

I am glad that someone finally brought up this issue. I have also been experiencing it for a very long time, and it is indeed annoying that I am unable to see the end of long lines of text. I just never got around to mentioning it since I don't post to the list all that often. I read a lot more than I post…and I learn a bit from what I read. Most of it is way over my head, being as I am not a programmer in any sense of the word.

Anyway, I would like to encourage Rich and crew to look into this issue, and find out why we are all experiencing this problem.

Thanks for your dedication to a fine product.

We (at least I) missed that point in that announcement.

Thanks Rich!
