Good { morning, afternoon, evening },

We are pleased to announce the release and immediate availability of BBEdit 16.0. This major upgrade adds nearly two hundred new features, improvements to existing features, and minor refinements.

Here are the high points, excerpted from the "What's New in BBEdit 16" page at <https://www.barebones.com/products/bbedit/bbedit16.html> .

* Expanded Shortcuts support

This release of BBEdit introduces expanded support for macOS "Shortcuts", via additional actions provided in the Shortcuts application. A "Transform Text" operation allows invocation of "one shot" operations of many kinds, and transforms are provided for extracting matching lines, deleting matching lines, sorting lines, and text replacement.

* Search for text in images

BBEdit can search for text in images, via OS-provided image text recognition. Use the Find or Multi-File Search windows to search for (and extract, if desired) matches for a given string or Grep pattern within image files.

* Added support for using the W3C HTML checker service.

This is on by default, and improves the correctness and accuracy of syntax checking in HTML5 documents. XML documents and non-HTML5 document types (as determined by the `DOCTYPE` declaration) continue to use the built-in syntax checker.

* Color customization in projects and notebooks

Added settings to projects, instaprojects, and notebooks for project- (and notebook-) specific color scheme settings. Settings here will override the global preferences, providing the ability to distinguish different projects by color scheme, if desired.

* `vi` keyboard emulation

Keyboard emulation for `vi` is available. This (optionally) enables a basic set of `vi` navigation and editing commands and modes.

* Internal performance improvements

We've done a lot of performance tuning in this release, and many operations are faster than before. In particular, throughput for SFTP file transfers is significantly improved compared to previous versions.

...and much more.

This version of BBEdit requires macOS 14.0 ("Sonoma") or later, and is compatible with and supported on macOS 26.0 ("Tahoe").

We encourage you to read the complete change notes for BBEdit 16.0: <https://www.barebones.com/support/bbedit/notes-16.0.html> . (We spent a lot of time writing those notes, so it would be great for someone to read them. Be that someone.)

Here are some key details on pricing and upgrades for BBEdit 16:

* The price for a new single-user license is US$59.99.

* If you purchased BBEdit 15 *directly from us* on or after *November 1, 2025*, you are eligible for a free upgrade.

We will be sending email to all eligible registered customers by Friday, May 29, 2026. Thank you for your patience. :-)

Meanwhile you can certainly use BBEdit 16 in evaluation mode until your new serial number arrives.

* BBEdit 15 customers who purchased between the original 15.0 release date of January 9, 2024 and the free-upgrade cutoff date of October 31, 2025 can upgrade for US$29.99.

* Registered customers of older BBEdit versions (2.5 through 14.6.9, inclusive) can upgrade for US$39.99.

* If you have been using BBEdit in Free Mode, BBEdit 16 will reset your evaluation period, and you will have a full 30 days in which to try out all of BBEdit 16's new features. After 30 days, BBEdit 16 will return to Free Mode.

Someday I'll look back on all this and laugh... until they sedate me.

Nice to see the search bar in Notebooks. I don't use Notebook files every day, but for some things they sure are cool. Plain text copy for desktop publishing, for example.

Mostly, it's nice to see the Notebook format is still on the BBEdit radar. It's a cool feature.

Upgrade to BBEdit 16
Copy from bash rc file the following line

Note that in the SHELL (bash) it displays as

1066_ 00~export GCP=dbarto-r9-ssh.graph.altair.com

bash: 00~export: command not found

1067_ 01~

Why does it do this now when it never did this before?

David
