I suspect I may have done this to myself by messing with the BBEdits folder inside Documents, but I can't seem to undo it.

With historical backups on, I get an error every time I save a document:

> An error (0) occurred. This may be because you don’t have permission to create files in the folder containing this document.

Uncheck the historical backups and no complaints. I have a "BBEdit Backups old" folder in Documents that has folders dated to just a few weeks ago (when I screwed things up, I believe).

Any help appreciated.

Hi John,

What permissions are shown when you Get Info (Command-I) on the backup
folder?

> An error (0) occurred. This may be because you don’t have permission
to create files in the folder

On the "BBEdit Backups old" folder, I have RW, staff has R and everyone has R. That's "drwxr-xr-x" via the shell.

Dang. Just in case, is there any chance BBEdit is now using/trying to
use a different folder? In relatively recent versions you can check the
Folders under the BBEdit menu; look for Document Backups.

Yeah, I've checked. Not there, which seems weird.

I've tried putting an alias in Documents that points to it, with the name "BBEdit Backups". No dice. I've even put that inside a folder called "BBEdit" in Documents. Nope.

Something seems goofy.

I'm running the latest BBEdit on latest macOS, and this is the path to
my current BBEdit backups folder:

'/Users/me/Library/Containers/com.barebones.bbedit/Data/Documents/BBEdit
Backups'

See if you have anything on that path.

Also, one other possibility: Are you the only user logging in to this
machine? You would need to be the owner of this directory, based on the
permissions you mentioned - only owner can write.

Your path does not exist on my Mac, which was a clean install when I got my 14” MacBook Pro last fall.

FWIW my path is

~/Library/Containers/com.barebones.bbedit/Data/Documents/BBEdit\ Backups

That's actually the same location: ~/me resolves as /Users/me

Did you mean earlier that your BBEdit doesn't show the menu command
BBEdit -> Folders? If it's not there in a recent install, then I think
you need to ask Barebones support for guidance, such as what to look for
in logs or other places to check permissions. Maybe something will show
up in logs around the time you said backups stopped being made.

First, that was Rod, not me.

Second, no, i don't have that folder.

Third, I'm on version 12, as the subject line notes. :-) This is not a recent install.

However, based on your observation, I looked in the Data directory and there are several symlinks to directories like Desktop and Downloads. So I made one to Documents. Problem solved. A new save creates a folder named by today's date inside the folder "BBEdit Backups" in Documents. If that folder is missing, it creates it. If there's an alias that points to another folder, it follows it.

I'm not quite sure that I deleted that symlink tucked away in the Library, but it's working now, so no questions asked.

( ~ == /Users/<username> )

Yes, I have the BBEdit->Folders menu option, and BBEdit->Folders->Document Backups points to the path I referenced.

For reference I'm running MacOS 15.5 and BBEdit 15.5.2
