BBEdit doesn't seem to allow me to directly enter ASCII control
characters into a file. For editing really old files, is there a way
for BBEdit to allow this? For instance, suppose I need to type the
ASCII "US" (unit separator) into a file. In "vi", I would simply type
control-_ and ASCII 0x1F would be entered.

In addition to typing control characters, I would like it if BBEdit
would display them. For me, using either the ^_ convention or, as I've
seen in other editors, display the name of the control character.

Currently, when I enable the show invisibles, BBEdit simply displays
these characters using the inverted question mark.

You can use BBEdit's ASCII Table palette to insert such characters; please
see "ASCII Table" under "Palettes" in the PDF manual.

Alternatively, if the system Input (flag) menu is enabled, you can use the
Unicode Hex Input method to insert arbitrary characters by typing their
values.
