I seem to recall this same problem with a prior upgrade. Just upgraded to v. 10 and usually new documents or would open in the open project, now they launch in a separate window. How to fix? Thanks.

I haven't tried it (BBEdit asks on first launch and I knew what I wanted), but does Preferences > Application > "Open documents into the front window when possible" (checked) do what you want?

Unfortunately the "Open documents into the front window when possible"
preference does not add a new document to the a project window - it
adds it to the frontmost window that is not a project window. If no
non-project windows are open a new document will open in a new
window.

If the "Open documents into the front window when possible" is not
checked each new document is opened in its own window.

The 'New Text Document' option is disabled in the options 'gear' at
the bottom of the lefthand/project pane in a project window. The 'New
Text Document' option does not appear in a non-project window. Both
sound like poor design choices.

The inability to add a new document to a project is an annoying
oversight. I certainly don't create all my code files first and then
group them all together into a project. At least in the previous
versions we could select the 'New' option (in the File menu or in the
window's document drawer) to add a new document to a window - even if
it was a 'project' window.

I'm testing the version 10 demo and certainly won't upgrade just to
make working with projects harder. Creating a new document in another
window and then dragging it to a project window is not conducive to a
smooth workflow.

"New Text Document" in the gear menu becomes active once you select
and/or open a file in the Project pane. Not sure why a selection
should be required (may be to identify the context?), but it worked
the same way for me in v9.

Amen to that. As you say, in v9 you could just hit Cmd-N and get a
new file started in the project window, which is a bit more convenient
than "New Text Document" in the gear menu. If you're working in a
project window, it seems like that's where you would want a new
document to appear by default.

From my experimenting, a new document cannot be added to an
existing project until it the new doc is saved. Once it is
saved, you can grab the document icon at the very top of the
document next to its name (what is that bar called?) and drag it
into a project file list.

I would also like the option of having new documents open into
the frontmost project window.

No, there was an option that allowed all cmd-N documents to be opened within the current project open and on top. There was a BBEdit edition where it didn't allow that when first released (I want to say v. 9) and then Bare Bones added the feature back in. I been using it just that way for almost the entire time w/ v. 9 and v. 8.

My reply, Tim, was in regard to how it seems to work in the
brand new v. 10. Guess I didn't make that clear.

I've figured out how to get a new document to open in a project
window.

* Select a document in the 'Project' section of the lefthand pane.
- this is the key to enabling the 'New Text Document' in the Action
gear.
* Choose 'New Text Document' from the Action gear.
- you will be prompted for a document name.
- remember to add the file extension.
* The new document will appear in the 'Currently Open Documents' list.
- the new document is not part of the project until you add it.

Things to keep in mind:
* The new (empty) document is created on your disc in the last folder
you opened/saved a document from/to.
- you are not prompted for a directory to save the new document in.
* You cannot rename this document in the 'Currently Open Documents' or
the 'Recent Documents' lists.
- this means you can't add an extension to the document name within
BBEdit once you've created it.
- you will need to make any name changes (or change its location) via
the Finder.
* You cannot create a new document in a brand new project window.
- the only way to enable the 'New Text Document' in the Action gear
is to select a document in the 'Project' section.
- a new project does not have any documents in the 'Project' section
and therefore you must add an existing document to the 'Project'
section before you can add a new (empty) document to the project
window.

This is probably why I'm going batty getting PeepOpen to work properly: I want PeepOpen to open a file from the project (or, FWIW, to have `bbedit --front-window` from the terminal or DTerm) in the project window.
