I get the following error when I check for updates in BBEdit "Software Update Check Failed: An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made."

Good { morning, afternoon, evening },

We are pleased to announce the release and immediate availability of BBEdit 11.6. This is a free update for anyone using BBEdit 11, and adds a variety of performance improvements, refinements to fit and finish, and changes to streamline workflow in specific areas.

In all, this new version includes over a hundred new features, changes to existing features, and fixes for specific reported issues. Version 11.6 requires Mac OS X 10.9.5 or later, and is fully compatible with OS X 10.11 "El Capitan."

The 11.6 update also includes all of the new features and refinements previously released as part of the BBEdit 11 upgrade <http://barebones.com/products/bbedit/bbedit11.html>.

A complete digest of the changes is available here:

     <http://www.barebones.com/support/bbedit/notes-11.6.html>

If you're already using BBEdit 11, you can choose "Check for Updates" from the BBEdit menu, or get the update from the BBEdit updates page:

     <http://www.barebones.com/support/bbedit/updates.html>

If you're using an older (pre-11.0) version of BBEdit, you can download the BBEdit 11 demo from here to try it out:

     <http://www.barebones.com/products/bbedit/demo.html>

BBEdit 11.6 introduces a new demo model in which its complete feature set is available for the first 30 days of use.

At the end of the 30-day evaluation period, BBEdit will remain permanently functional with a revised feature set that includes its powerful text editing capabilities but not its web authoring tools or other exclusive features. BBEdit's exclusive features may be re-enabled at any time with a purchased license.

Enjoy,

R.

The servers and services are working normally, but in the past
we've seen situations in which proxies and gateways cache old
certificates or otherwise interfere with secure connections to
Software Update.

In that case, the easiest thing to do is to download and install
the update manually: <http://www.barebones.com/support/bbedit/updates.html>.

Sorry for the inconvenience,

Just to add another data point, I’m seeing the same thing, even after upgrading to 11.6. If nobody else is running into this, it’s probably just as Rich says, some kind of external interference.

The following is from a Mac (I tried with macOS 10.12 and 10.11)

openssl s_client -connect versioncheck.barebones.com:443 < /dev/null
CONNECTED(00000003)

Linux gives a little more details:

Further to Rich's post, if you are using a BBEdit 11.6 *beta*
and encounter this error, it is due to a known issue which does
_not_ affect the release version.

So, please instead just manually update (as detailed above) and
we apologize for the inconvenience.

[PS: If you are _not_ using the beta, then Rich's prior comments
apply or if you have any further questions, please contact
support directly.]

Where it is no doubt having a great time frolicking in the fields with the other, surplus to requirements, features.
