Cyclocross race coming up this weekend - pending tasks!

Hey Guys,

Craig and a few others have been running around to get the upcoming cross race off the ground.

A bunch of stuff needs to be done - can anyone pitch in please?

Craig, can you share your wish list on this group please so that we can help you with the race?

A couple of things we need in place by Saturday (course setup);

·         Bamboo (or wood) stakes, 1 metre in length (2cm diameter). We’ll need at least 200 of them, if we want to make this look like a cyclocross course. I would do this, but I’d be charged double at least!

·         Confirmation from Bhartiya that we can use part of their grassed area which has some steps for the course (I highlighted this area on the image sent earlier this week). This is not a big deal as we can always cut this from the course.

There’s a few concrete blocks lying around the area which we could use to build the hurdles, so no issues there.

 

Is there someone who organizes volunteers? We would need 5-6 volunteers on the Saturday (afternoon) to set up most of the course. Also, some early arrivals on the Sunday to finalise the marking pre-race…

Thoughts on alternative means of marking the cycling "lanes" in the carpark area would be appreciated. We need to have some type of barrier though to stop riders cutting lanes...

Yes, got the purpose for the stakes but do you know a source yet? 

Guess, concrete blocks should be fine for the hurdles. Steps are a great idea, I hope Bhartiya city says ok to that.

Last year we requested vivek (Mr 69) to make these wooden sticks about 100 / 200. But we could pick up only a handful of those. He might have the remaining or we can ask him to make those

Thanks Modi, I checked with Vivek just now. He doesn't have any with him. He said BOTS has a bunch - do we? 

Vivek may be able to make some more but he can't say for sure until tomorrow when he's at the factory. Apparently they make them from the waste material left over, but he's not sure they have any waste at the moment. 

It's probably best to continue looking, will check with Vivek tomorrow evening.

Guys , how about checking with some junk/old stuff stores.

We have couple of them on Thanisandra road ( while coming from Nagawara to Bhartiya City/Hegde Nagar). Normally , these shops stock lot of used long wooden poles.

I can check with them tomorrow evening. Or somebody else can enquire if he/she happen to pass by this side.

Nalla, I think these are quite essential to get the CX feel! A must-do IMO. 

Worst case, we can plan to buy the pipes and use them - they would be worth it, we can use them for other races and annually for the CX race too. 

Rohan, can you confirm that the budget has room for this?

Yes buddy, I totally agree that it's required for the CX feel. I was just hinting at keeping back up plan.
Even if we decide in buying PVC pipe etc, it will cost to transport them to race venue & also to back to storage (BOTS?) .
It's better if we think about all these while planning.
Best will be to get from scrap dealers & return it post race. We can that way rent it for like half a day alone.

In the way to office , I visited a hardware shop. They have PVC pipes in diff sizes. Ref pic attached.

Here are the rates

1) 32 mm - 20 ft pipe ( ~ 6 mtrs) for Rs 260

2) 40 mm - 20 ft pipe ( ~ 6 mtrs) for Rs 400 

Cap to cover pipe end is around Rs 10.

If we do quick maths.. we will need around 33 pipes to make 200 1 mtr cuts... it will cost around 8.5 k.

Not worth... i think.

Letz try with fencing rentals.

Barricade rentals are Rs.600 each for a 10ft piece! Height is 4 feet.

Price knocks it out as an option.

I was told that wooden stakes are available at Ibrahim Sahib Street, a street parallel to Commercial Street. Can anyone check?
