OUR BOOKS: for intellectual, moral survival
SOME THOUGHTS FOR THOUGHTFUL PERSONS
Dear Reader
As you are aware the present epoch is a period of increasing confusion and delusion, anguish and sufferings for the Muslims in particular. This has been characterized by growing assaults to destroy the physical and intellectual reserves of the Muslim nation. At the same time a tremendous anti-Muslim campaign has been launched by the western media, political, academic and conservative lobbies across the continents of Europe, America and Asia. It is a serious challenge, which needs to be faced with a positive intellectual and functional approach. The wave of hatred and hostility needs to be curbed and false perceptions need to be contained. This animosity has become intense since the 9/11 incident which has been attributed largely to Muslim terrorists. Consequently, it has led to severe attacks on the Muslim communities without being involved in the onslaughts on either side.
In view of these disastrous developments we have produced a number of books to counter the pernicious effects of the false propaganda with rational and authentic arguments. It is a concerted effort to establish that ISLAM is not a religion of extremism and fanaticism. Besides, the books provide a critical analysis of the psychology of ideologies which have been largely perverted to suit specific ends. With these reserves at our disposal we invite you to capture the zeitgeist which is imperative for elevating and humanizing the process of evolution. Just to give you an idea of the books we produce we give hereunder a list of the titles that are available for your study and consideration.

TEARS FOR PAKISTAN
“Fondly we weep
for the beauty that is gone”
How shocking could be the situations when one feels impelled to shed tears, wail and cry. How shocking could be the conditions when one is left in the midst of a tempest with nowhere to go. Such are the conditions currently prevailing in Pakistan that make us tormented with agonizing pain, anguish and angst. In such a state of affairs the onslaughts, both physical and psychological, have become unbearable and common citizens are left at the mercy of diminishment.
It is a journey of despair that takes us through the voyages and encounters dawning realization that the elements of evils and violence dominate the channels through which we have to traverse our journey. It is a travesty of destiny that our journey has been exposed to all the travails that strike us at every juncture that confronts us. A mire of woes and an abyss of degeneration await us to devour our soul and existence. Woes as Harry Schmidt in his book “Relativity and Universe” says have afflicted our existence with ‘stagnation of motion and meaningless of life’. “Woes have destroyed the beautiful world with violent blows.
The uncivilized traits of corruption, conflicts, and ignorance are the obvious facets of the contemporary society. With the growing trend of intolerance and extremism the whole landscape has become polluted and unhealthy. Militants have their own cockfights with violent and aggressive deployment of the destructive instruments at their disposal. They crave such violence and enjoy sporadic victories, however disdainful and disgusting. Animal savagery, male narcissism, cockfights and blood squandering are the main occupations that they gleefully indulge in.
The cult of dogmatism coupled with extremism and terrorism, currently so widely spread across the country, generates the evils that undermine both the principles of ethics, governance, viability of state and belief in democracy. Democracy, independence of judiciary and viability of media which were restored after a long struggle seem to have lost their meanings and integrity. It is not the rape and brutalization of a single woman or a single community, but of the whole society and entire conception on which is based the edifice of Islam and its civilization. It is like gong to see the Macbeth and coming back with the feelings of how, in spite of capturing a kingdom, you lose your soul.
It is like carrying a pair of expensive glasses, and yet being ignorant of the lessons of human history. Aristotle here brings in the poet and historian. The poet, Aristotle says, never makes any real statements at all. The poet’s job is not to tell you what happened, but what happens. He gives you the typical, recurring, or what Aristotle calls the universal event. You wouldn’t go to Macbeth to learn about the history of Scotland—you go to it to learn what man feels like after he’s gained a kingdom and lost his soul. Macbeth enables us to see a dimension of our own subjectivity and diminishment.
The hues and nuances of our religious, social and political life have become so ugly that only the darker recesses appear to contaminate the main forms of life. In fact all the activities which should have led to rejuvenating the rotten structures have led to an abrupt increase in the incidents of intolerance and savagery, brutality, and brutishness. Human beings are losing the qualities of humanity and are absorbing the traits of tigers and brutes.
Islam is being used as a ploy for specific ends and its application does not lead to maintaining relationship with God and His creatures. Islam seems to be misinterpreted and mismanaged. Dismayed by the current degeneration the critics contend that Islam has lost its vibrancy and is creeping in Pakistan. But in fact it is not Islam, but Muslims who have disowned the essential elements of their religion’s conceptual integrity. Humanity in Pakistan has lost its beauty. Philanthropy and generosity have been left for others to practice. Mercy and compassion have been reduced to mere theoretical expressions. All the traits of a civilized nation are being abdicated to satisfy ideological distortions and collective exploitation. It is a matter of collective shame, a point of degeneration and decadence.
Muslims over the past years have become so STAGNANT that all traces of flexibility, understanding and brotherhood have fizzled out. Proclaiming that “we are holier than thou and you are uglier than all others” Muslims assert their ideologies, howsoever fissiparous they may be, to win the accolade which they may not deserve. If others don’t listen to them or reject their notions, they resort to the use of force. This is how they have made Islam ‘creep’ where it should have stood with dignity and decorum.
The state which was supposed to sustain the national survival has become so fragile that now both the indigenous and foreign critics are expressing suspicions on its viability. Pakistan is now being dubbed as a failed state. This assessment, in our conjectures, may not be very accurate but in a country where terrorists and drone attacks are causing huge human and material losses is an obvious indicator of the dysfunctional deviation of the state apparatus. Hypocrisy, illicit pursuits for money, inefficient and corrupt practices have exposed the rotten contours of our leadership. There is an acute paucity of decent and honest persons and I often fail to meet genuinely cultivated, civilized human beings in my country. People may be wearing long beards and performing religious rituals yet they obviate the very fundamentals of Islam and civilized conduct.
There is hardly any interest in reading and learning in Pakistan. The majority of people do not read books or newspapers. It is the greatest tragedy and a sure pathway to decline and degeneration. “He who is unable to read and write and live in society or who has no need because he is sufficient for himself,” Aristotle wrote, “must be either a beast or a god.” Hundreds of thousands of people who fall in this category in Pakistan are clearly not gods, and hence in this light could be regarded nearing the level of animalism. Their actions, especially the acts of killing and dehumanizing fellow-citizens only reveal their bestial nature and illustrate the imponderable on way to peaceful, orderly and civilized living. It is the peace and orderliness and not savage disorder that elevate the status of man. Geertz, a South American writer, says “you cannot ascend the status ladder by winning cockfights; you cannot as an individual really ascend it at
all.”
Most people in Pakistan have only one interest in life and that is to consume sumptuous dishes and spend money on frivolous pursuits. It is for this reason that we shed tears and wonder how flimsy our pursuits are. Since people in general are uneducated and illiterate, they don’t have anything to do with books, arts and culture, therefore, they waste their money on instruments of conspicuous consumption and destructive egoism. Nevertheless, we are convinced that without books no nations can survive and no people can prosper.
As a result of low literacy rate and lack of cultured, civilized norms most of the human, ethical virtues seem to have vanished and the sinful character has become increasingly conspicuous. This is the most despicable aspect of our contemporary existence which deprives us of the ultimate goal that we had set at Pakistan’s creation. At the time of our birth we were known as the “Twentieth Century Miracle” and now we are creeping for our existence. One wonders how ugly our existence has become and how miserable the Quid would be feeling on viewing the hideous hues of our existence.
Dogmas, myths and extremism are the other evils which have reduced the quality of our thought and action. A vicious culture of violence and militancy keeps on afflicting the general segments of human society. On top of that there is no vision and wisdom in the corridors of power. In such a wayward way the ship of the country is being led by the blind leaders with no sense of direction. As myopic people, naked in body and mind, we have paid a heavy price for our failures. We have learnt no lessons from our history and we have been miserably dishonest, looters and exploiters. We squander the country’s resources on conspicuous consumption and transfer huge sums in personal coffers to foreign banks. In spite of all these criminal connivances we are not ashamed and continue to persist in our plunders. The Supreme Court remains helpless and its verdict of December 16, 2009 on the looters and plunderers remains unimplemented.
What is most worrisome is the frequency of crises and conspiracies that conspire to erode the integrity of institutions and social, political structures of the country. It is the only country in the world that is poised to fight its own people on its own soil. Even in Africa the conditions have not been as chaotic as they are over here in Pakistan. We have mismanaged our affairs so badly that we appear to be pushed to the brink of a bankrupt state, both morally and financially, and are on the verge of failing our responsibilities as a viable state. Even in foreign policy the country has failed to have any impact on foreign developments, as no one cares when you are crippled and creeping for foreign assistance. It is for this reason that Kashmir remains unresolved in spite of all hue and cries.
The law and justice situation is also agonizing. There is hardly any rule of law and most of the departments related to the administration of law are corrupt and inefficient. A famous saying of Hazrat Ali should be a reminder to us. It says that a country could live in ‘kufr’ for some time, but could not exist in injustice for long.
Nevertheless, despite all these warnings we remain indolent, corrupt and degenerate.
Now the question arises whether we will shed tears, the real tears, for our country and confront the challenges with honesty and determination. Will we ever shatter the cobweb of corruption and conflicts, and come out of the abyss of degeneration and delusions? Will we ever be true to the essence of our religion and civilization and assume the character of an honest and civilized Muslim nation? Can we ever hope that this journey of despair would ever come to an end and carry us across the babbling brooks that swing with the melodies of life and songs of spring? Will we ever have a vision of hope, the politics of peace and harmony? And will we ever embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty?
THE MUSLIM DELUSION
Revised edition with updated features
Writing books and animating their vitality with constant doses of creative ideas and thoughts is an important requisite of our intellectual survival. This is also imperative for maintaining the flow of the vibrant forces that religions and sciences emanate and consequently lead to creating the exalted levels of renaissance. This is how excellent civilizations are shaped and this is how human beings are turned into moulds of best of creatures.
In order to return to the initial phases of this undertaking, it may be mentioned here that this book (THE MUSLIM DELUSION) to start with was written to meet the high standards of the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan, as they planned to produce a text book for postgraduate studies. Out of hundreds of scholars from all over Pakistan this author was reposed with the responsibility to write and elucidate the concepts on which were based the principles of diversity and unity of the Muslim communities. The understanding of these principles also fosters the possibilities for realizing the ideals that any enlightened community conceives. This also builds the foundations of civilizations which must be preserved to sustain cultural, social and humane endowments of the evolving societies.
Analysing the Muslim Delusion and examining its trappings was an arduous job which took more than four years to reach the final stage of its consummation. The book was published in October 2010 and was consumed by the end of the same year. There was a growing demand for more publication and readers in general and students in particular were looking for more copies for further studies. This made me give up other activities and undertake the task of rewriting it in order to meet the paucity in the corridors of learning and excellence.
Education is a subject of deep interest and intense devotion which makes the educator accomplish the ideas that he sets before him. Despite its great diversity and complexity, the author concentrated on the crucial questions of orthodoxy and enlightenment, dogmatism and dynamism. For him the concept of creativity and renaissance remained cardinal and was given added hues and nuances in the discourse which continued till the second edition was thoroughly revised and reshaped. The ideals of religion, intellect, and rationalism were thrashed out in light of the evolving phenomena and compulsive requirements of the modern age.
However, the distorted notions of religious ideology especially in conservative societies form an unpalatable feature of conservative thought. It is a dominant phenomenon which coupled with dogmas and myths places constraints in the way of intellectual evolution of modern thought. It also complicates the adaptation of modern knowledge within the parameters of traditional perceptions,
In our revised edition we have tried to examine the Islamic traditions more sympathetically keeping in view not only the growing onslaught of modernism, secular seductions and scientific explorations but also the deviations and distortions of ultra-conservative schools of thought. We have tried to establish an intellectual, pragmatic approach providing an objective account of the developments, doctrines and interpretations of both the dogmatic and liberal schools. Most of the theories and practices have been explained with their relevance to the contemporary life. Because science has assumed increasing significance over the past decades, we have added some new evolutionary elements to our discourse. Portraying the spiritual roots of Islam we have tried to make it more relevant by integrating important scientific and intellectual features to it. The volume of current scholarship has been developed by covering the socio-political and cultural constituents
to the body-politick of religious conservatism. At many junctures in the book areas of current scholarly debate have been refreshed by examining the creative perspectives of the Prophet and the book that was revealed to him.
The second revised edition of the “Muslim Delusion” improves and preserves the outstanding features that a living religion like Islam furnishes. Valuable academic source material has also been updated in this edition so that it becomes more pertinent to the postgraduate studies for which this book is primarily produced.
Some of the chapters in this book are outstanding. For example, “The Enlightenment of the Qur’an”, “Values for beautification of life”, “The Prophet’s Vision”, Creativity & Renaissance” are the major subjects that we need to examine and reintegrate in our systems. It is only with in creasing focus on knowledge and creativity that we can move towards the goals that remain obscured under the debris of ignorance and obscurantism.
With all these efforts involved in the production of this new edition it is hoped that it will turn out to be an illuminating and productive study especially for those students who have an inspiring urge to expand their intellectual horizons and to accomplish the ideals of higher education and academic excellence.

Crises, Crises and Crises
How Pakistan is being turned into a failed state?
By Iqbal Syed Hussain
“PAKISTAN: A PROUD BUT FAILING STATE” is the title of our book which deals primarily with constitutional and political crises, clash of institutions, religious extremism and terrorism. It is a tale of debilitating maladies which have brought the country on the brink of divisions, chaos and confusion. No resolution seems to be an ultimate solution of the complex nature of unending crises that threaten the integrity and viability of the state.
Although Pakistan may not be a failed state, but it is very much nearing a level where its affairs appear to be assuming unmanageable dimensions. Corruption, moral and social degeneration, clashes between the executive and judiciary remain the main stumbling blocks on the way to effective functioning of the state. Poor governance, high cost of living and rapidly deteriorating social, moral and religious norms have led to divisions and deviations which continue to perpetuate a pattern of conflicts and encounters. It represents a failure to comprehend and resolve the issues with sincerity and integrity the conditions demand.
The challenges if not resolved promptly and adequately could cause severe damages leading to further degeneration and dissolution. The quantum of confusion and corruption is so gross that sustenance of the very system seems to be threatened by the growing wave of alienation and distortions, expediency and exploitation. The psychology of ideologies and the implications of egocentric policies have obscured the vision of all the stakeholders in the state. The laxity of incompetent officials and abdication of the sense of accountability on the part of corrupt politicians have caused alienation at the level of institutions and common citizens. The same process seems to perpetuate which started in the days of Isikindar Mirza and Ghulam Mohammad, and the people of Pakistan are baffled by the policies which have no substance and no reality to resolve the contemporary issues. Humanity stares in the eyes of the state for its survival, but no constructive
response seems to be forthcoming.
The book is an agonizing analysis of the malaise that has placed serious constraints on the way of creating a sustainable future and a healthy mansion of a prosperous state. The book highlights the values which must be nurtured to avert the crises and ensure a respectable national profile in the comity of nations. This provides a rational and balanced perception and an honest and realistic appraisal of the conditions which pose a serious challenge to the integrity of the state. As a “practical expression of the exigencies” it is a serious study which is worth exploration. Every effort has to be made to rectify the failings of the state and deficiencies of the society. This is how we can remove the disagreeable facets from the ugly face of politics. This is how we can confirm the conception that must be preserved to sustain the state of Pakistan.
