I see many version when I go to the download page at https://github.com/bazelbuild/bazel/releases, which one should I choose for Mac OS X? I have JDK1.8 installed.  I tried downloading the linux version and got the following error.

Tony—you'll want to use darwin releases. Darwin is the ope source OS that OS X is built on top of.

Thanks Kamal. I downloaded the source and compiled it but I tried your suggestion and it worked as well.
