Hi Bazel devs!

I wonder why Bazel is still using gRPC 0.15? This is almost 1 year behind. Can we upgrade this to a more recent version?

Is this more appropriate to ask in bazel-dev forum? However I see much less activity there..

Hi Alpha,

great that you care about gRPC too! This is actually not blocked by proto to proto deps. It's just me not having had the time to push it (sorry!). I expect to merge it tomorrow and so this will definitely be part of the 0.5.1 release :-)!

Best,
Jakob

Cool! We're use it quite extensively. I'm looking forward to the upgrade. Thanks.

We might need to upgrade gRPC again because of 1.3.0 containing a buggy netty:

gRPC 1.4 seems to be landing soon.

Hi,

correct me if I am wrong, but the problem seems to be that gRPC was used with an unsupported Netty version. We don't have that issue in bazel, also we don't use the native KQueue transport.

As a side note, the bigger problem with Netty is that it's HTTP/2 implementation is marked experimental, changes frequently and breaks API's. Thus even minor releases might be incompatible with each other.

Best,
Jakob
