Hi Paul,
Re #14314:
The original commit (227e49e28e5122cddd6c4cb70686ff7bde3617ea) is part of the latest two rolling releases, 6.0.0-pre.20211202.4 and 6.0.0-pre.20211215.3.
The PR that was cherrypicked into the release branch is part of 5.0rc3.
Consequently, any of these three releases should help with your use case. FYI, there’s bazelisk which makes using release candidates and rolling releases a bit easier.
Re release frequency:
We plan to release major (x.0) releases every nine months, as per https://blog.bazel.build/2020/11/10/long-term-support-release.html. Unfortunately 5.0 has been delayed (see below).
Additionally we want to publish rolling releases weekly. However, they’re tied to internal Bazel releases at Google, which are sometimes delayed due to bugs. Moreover, we cannot push releases during the holidays.
Re 5.0:
Please see the tracking issue #14013 for more details. We wanted to release 5.0 before BazelCon, but several bugs + the holiday break caused huge delays. The current target date is 2022-01-10.
Re rolling release naming:
6.0.0-pre.20211117.1 (2021-12-07) is based on an internal Bazel release whose first candidate was cut on 2021-11-17. 2021-12-07 is the date when the actual rolling release was created.
We went from 5.0.0-pre… to 6.0.0-pre… when the baseline for 5.0 was chosen (i.e. when 5.0rc1 was created).
Cheers,
