Greetings everyone -

We’re very excited to announce that we are kicking off BayPHL, the Bay Area Puzzle Hunt League, with our first event.

BayPHL 1 will be an adaptation and re-imagning of the recent BAPHL 24 puzzle hunt, which ran in Watertown, MA in August. We’ve taken those puzzles and, where necessary, adjusted them for a new route and home here in the SF Bay Area. We will run two separate identical instances of BayPHL 1: one on Saturday, November 8th and the other on Sunday, November 9th. We will ask teams for their first and optionally second choice of day, and will be filling each day on a first-come-first-serve basis. There will be a cap on teams for each day.

Registration will open next Monday, September 15th, at 5 PM Pacific Daylight Time. For more info, see our newly launched website, https://bayphl.org/1/. Tell your friends!

Happy puzzling,
- Evan

Hello again!

Thanks to everyone who has registered so far for BayPHL 1; we’re so excited for everyone here to get to experience the hunt. If you’ve been watching our registration form, you might have noticed that we were briefly sold out, first on Saturday and then for both days. However, after doing some internal planning, wrangling, and soul-searching, we’ve concluded that we can run a slightly larger hunt than originally planned, so we’ve opened registration back up, and we still have space for 15-20 more teams.

If you’ve been on the fence about registering or if you have friends who you haven’t already reached out to, now’s the time! We won’t be able to expand our capacity any further, so this is your last chance.

I’ll also use this as an opportunity for an aside. We’ve called this BayPHL “1” somewhat aspirationally, but while I’d love to see more BayPHL hunts in the future, there aren’t any concrete plans. If writing a hunt for the Bay Area is exciting to you or even if you just want to re-mount a hunt that you’ve run in the past, I’d love to help make that happen. (I never did any of the pre-pandemic hunts, and my guess is plenty of the Bay Area puzzling community didn’t either). Feel free to drop me a line and I’m happy to lend the BayPHL name and whatever support I can to bringing more puzzles to the Bay.
