November 14, 2011 The Truth About Congressman Benishek’s Record While back in the district last week, Congressman Benishek noticed a television ad being run by the League of Conservation Voters misrepresenting his position. Here are the facts about where Representative Benishek stands on subsidies and tax loopholes:
Since coming to Congress, Representative Benishek has stated that he would prefer to see comprehensive tax reform that would hopefully erase the subsidies, credits, and loopholes that pick winners and losers. Oil companies do not receive government subsidies; rather these companies receive the business tax deductions that other industries have available to them. Even with these deductions, major energy producers paid $35.7 billion income taxes in 2009 alone. The oil and gas industry pays over $86 million every day in rents, royalties, bonus and income tax payments to the federal government—more than almost any other industry. Legislative Outlook Later this week, the House is scheduled to complete consideration of H.R. 2838, the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act of 2011. This bill has been amended by Rep. Benishek to block overzealous federal regulations from threatening the S.S. Badger, a historic ferry that has been operating on Lake Michigan for over 50 years.
This week, House bill -- H.R. 822, the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act -- would require states to honor concealed carry permits issued by every other state, even when the holder would not qualify for a permit under local law.
