Happy Monday everyone!
We just had Memorial Day last week and today we're at another day of military remembrance. Today is D-Day. On this day in 1944, the men of Normandy swarmed Omaha Beach and the coast of France in the effort to free Europe from the scourge of Nazi Germany. My grandma always likes telling me about how the plant she worked in fell silent and the supervisor came on the loudspeaker to announce that the operation had commenced and the place fell silent in prayer. Many years later, an aide to Dwight D. Eisenhower found a short speech in a shirt pocket to be used in case the invasion, called Operation Overlord, was not successful. Thank God he never had to deliver that speech. I watched President Reagan's Normandy speech from 1984 the other day and it gave me chills. "These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. And these are the heroes who helped end a war."
A reminder that this Saturday, the Tri-City 9/12 group is hosting "The Case for the Constitution - a Federalist Papers Seminar". The event will take place at 9 a.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 225 S. Linn St. Cost is $20 and includes lunch. The seminar will feature Dr. John Pafford, history professor from Northwood University and adjunct scholar with the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.
