RE: Proposed Pesticide Spraying in Tomales Bay: Pediatric Health Emergency

To the USDA Forest Service and public land decision-makers:

I write as a pediatrician with an urgent medical objection to the proposed aerial spraying over Tomales Bay. This is not a matter of reasonable disagreement among adults. This is about children whose developing brains and bodies cannot defend themselves against neurotoxic assault.

Children are not mini adults. Their detoxification pathways are immature. Their blood-brain barriers are not fully formed. They breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults. They play in the grass, put hands in mouths, and live closer to the ground where chemicals concentrate. They have decades of life ahead for cumulative damage to manifest.

The pesticides you propose to release whatever the specific formulation will not stay where you spray them. They drift. They settle in waterways. They enter the food chain. They accumulate in breast milk. Tomales Bay is not a sealed laboratory; it's a living ecosystem where families live, farm, fish, and raise children.

I have watched the rates of autism, ADHD, asthma, and autoimmune disease climb relentlessly over my 45 year career.  The research linking glyphosate and other pesticide exposures to neurodevelopmental harm is robust and growing regardless of what captured regulatory agencies claim. Additionally, negative synergism between various toxicants is never addressed.  Prenatal and early childhood pesticide exposure are associated with:

Lower IQ and cognitive deficits
Increased ADHD diagnoses
Autism spectrum disorders
Disrupted endocrine function
Childhood leukemia and brain tumors
This is not alarmism. This is the precautionary principle that our regulatory agencies have abandoned in favor of industry convenience.

You cannot obtain informed consent from the children you will expose. You cannot ask a three-year-old whether they accept the risk. You are proposing a population-level experiment without consent on the most vulnerable humans in the community.  Has the spraying been raised with members of our community?

The burden of proof lies with those who would expose children to neurotoxic chemicals and not with those who object. If you cannot demonstrate safety with long-term, independent (non-industry-funded) pediatric outcome data, you have no moral or medical authority to proceed.

I have written this substack regarding the harms to children here:  https://michelleperromd337477.substack.com/p/the-zombie-science-poisoning-our

There is no justification for aerial dispersal of known carcinogens over populated areas. The community was not consulted. I learned of this plan through social media, not from the agency charged with stewarding our public lands.  This excellent substack was written recently by Kristin Lawless (https://kristinlawless.substack.com/p/california-is-spraying-our-forests) and summarized my understanding of what is occurring in my own home community:

I wrote this letter to the US Forest Service recently regarding massive toxic spraying occurring in our most pristine forests in Tahoe National Forest and Mount Lassen in California:

If you want to appreciate the devastation from forest spraying with glyphosate as well as other toxic pesticides, please read the works of Judy Hoy, Carol Van Strum, and Dr. Stephanie Seneff.

Prior to spraying, I would recommend that you test the children of your area for pesticide levels and share those results with parents.  Your decisions to spray your own children not to mention wildlife will be altered when you see the stunning levels of pesticides in their hair and urine.  These tests can be ordered via the Health Research Institute (https://hrilabs.org).  Once you document high levels of toxic glyphosate in children’s bodies, what will you do with those results?

This letter has been copied to over 100 health practitioners, Weston A. Price chapter members, West Marin residents, activists, legislators, and international colleagues. Once the planes fly, there is no recall. This natural disaster-in-waiting is entirely preventable.

I urge you in the strongest possible terms: do not spray Tomales Bay. The children of this community deserve better than to be collateral damage in a 'pest management strategy’.  Is this the best that we can do on behalf of our children, wildlife, and our environment?

Respectfully submitted,

Michelle Perro, MD
