Santa Clara Parks & Recreation’s Roberta Jones Junior Theatre is excited to tell you about all of the theatre arts classes and workshops we have planned for summer! We have a variety of in-person classes offered at the Community Recreation Center and still have some online classes available as well. All in-person classes offered through the City of Santa Clara Parks & Recreation Department will follow current State and County Public Health Department Orders and guidance. Participants and staff will be given a daily health screening and will be required to wear a face covering at all times. Registration is currently open. Singing
Choir- Online, June 15-Aug. 3, T, 5-6 p.m., 8-18 yrs.
Participants will learn proper vocal technique and improve singing ability while learning fun, modern songs. This virtual class will focus on two songs. Students will receive recorded parts which they can practice on during and outside of class. Students will record a video of themselves singing both songs so they can be part of the final mix/video.

This virtual class will focus on vocal technique, acting,
and solo singing. There will be a strong emphasis on dynamics, technique, ear
training, music theory and performative quality. Part of the class will be
spent choosing a song and creating an industry standard cut that can be used
for auditions.

Come hone your musical theatre dancing skills! Throughout the session, students will learn numerous short dance sequences from musicals spanning from the Golden Age to the present. Classes will focus on how to safely and effectively warm up for any dance routine. Josh Rubietta received a BA in Dance, and the Musical Theatre certificate from Northwestern University. Since graduating, he has choreographed for musicals and dance companies and has taught musical theatre dance at the college level.

Acting
Imagine Me - Online, June 14-Aug. 2, M, 3-3:45 p.m., 6-9

The imagination is where everything begins! Spark your child's imagination with
this, high-quality, creative dramatics class that has now gone virtual! In
these delightful classes, children explore creativity through interactive
storytelling and improvisational games. Behind the excitement and fun of acting
out the adventures of classic stories are the educational benefits of this
program. The students gain self-confidence and learn to cooperate with others
while stimulating their imaginations and enjoying physical exercise.
Made for the Stage Youth, Disney’s Winnie the Pooh KIDS,
June 14 – July 23, M-F, 12-2 p.m. and Online, M-F, 10-11 a.m., 8-12 yrs.
This special summer program is for youth that are made for the stage! “Disney's Winnie the Pooh KIDS,” is a delightful show based on the beloved characters of A.A. Milne and the 2011 Disney animated feature film. Featuring favorite songs from the film, as well as new hits by the Academy Award-winning Robert and Kristen Lopez (Frozen), this honey-filled delight is as sweet as it is fun. Welcome to the Hundred Acre Wood, where Winnie the Pooh is once again in search of honey. Along the way, he meets his pals, Tigger, Piglet, Rabbit and Owl, but soon discovers that Christopher Robin has been captured by the mysterious Backson! As they prepare for a rescue operation, the animals learn about teamwork, friendship and, of course... sharing snacks. This program will incorporate virtual vocal rehearsals as well as in-person acting and dancing rehearsals. Individual schedules vary with part received. Rehearsal schedules will be distributed when casting is complete. Auditions will take place in class. The performance of this production will be filmed, edited and shared with families. Filming will take place on July 22 and 23.
Made for the Stage Teens, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,
June 14 – July 23, M, W, 4-7:10 p.m., TH, F, 4-6 p.m. and Online, M-F,
12:30-1:30 p.m., 13-19 yrs.
This special summer program is for
teens that are made for the stage! "You’re A Good Man, Charlie
Brown," follows Charlie Brown and the entire Peanuts gang. Your favorite
characters explore life’s great questions as they play baseball, struggle with
homework, sing songs, swoon over their crushes, and celebrate the joy of
friendship. The winner of two 1999 Tony Awards includes the additional revival
songs of “Beethoven Day” and “My New Philosophy”. This program will incorporate
virtual vocal rehearsals as well as in-person acting and dancing rehearsals.
Individual schedules vary with part received. The performance of this
production will be filmed, edited and streamed on August 6 and 7. Filming will
take place on July 22 and 23.
Technical Theatre
Set Design Workshop, June 14 – June 17, M-W, 9:30-11:30 a.m., 10-17 yrs.
This workshop is ideal for design
students and drama students who are interested in the set design process.
Discussions are meant to engage, inform and improve awareness of the creative
process in stage design. Over the three-day workshop, the class will go over
the creative process, where it starts and developing your own ideas, using
historical research, theater spaces, fly systems and soft goods. The class will
cover design principles from a designer’s perspective using a script analysis
read through. Class will also cover using blueprints, scale models or digital
3D rendering for set design.
Theatrical Carpentry Workshop, June 21 – June 23, M-W, 9:30-11:30 a.m., 10-17 yrs.
Participants will learn the process of building theater sets in a scene shop. The three-day class will review blueprints, models, sketch plans, specifications and create a list of materials. Become knowledgeable in the shop tools and safety gear and get hands on experience, creating theater flats and flying scenery.
Theatrical Scene Painting Workshop, June 28 – June 30, M-W, 9:30-11:30 a.m., 10-17 yrs.
In this three-day workshop, participants will discuss color theory, create paint elevations and paint a backdrop. Painting techniques such as painting realistic bricks and rocks, wood grain, marble finish and other common techniques will be taught.
