Actors Ensemble of Berkeley is holding auditions for a staged reading of THE EMPEROR OF THE MOON by Aphra Behn, adapted by Victoria Siegel and Erin Perry, and directed by Erin Perry. Auditions will be held on Sunday, April 26th from 4:30pm-7:30pm at Berkeley Lodge #270, International Order of the Oddfellows, 2288 Fulton St, Berkeley, CA 94704. The play will be performed on May 26th at LaVal's Subterranean Theater in Berkeley just north of the U.C. campus.
A summary of the play is available on wikipedia. The script is being adapted for length and clarity from the original, a flavor of the adaptation can be gleaned from the sides which will be provided to the actors who sign up for auditions. Seeking 8-9 actors. Actors of all ages, genders, and races are encouraged to audition. Major roles are below. Role descriptions listed are understood to be descriptions of the role, not necessarily the actor playing the role.
Doctor Baliardo: A foolish man who believes the moon is inhabited.
Elaria: Doctor Baliardo’s daughter. In love with Don Cinthio.
Bellemante: Doctor Baliardo’s niece. In love with Don Charmante.
Don Cinthio: Young suitor, in love with Elaria. Emperor of the Moon when disguised.
Don Charmante: Young suitor, in love with Bellemante. Prince of Thunderland when disguised.
Harlequin: Servant to the young men, counterpart to Scaramouch.
Scaramouch: A servant to the young ladies and the Doctor. A trickster.
Mopsophil: Governess to the young ladies.
Stage Directions/Misc.
Sides will be provided for the audition. You do not need to memorize these. The audition will span between 4:30pm and 7:30pm, you may be released early or you may be needed for the entirety. You may be asked to read for various roles. Please wear comfortable clothes, and bring water and your lovely energy.
Rehearsals will be held the evenings of May 24th and May 25th (with potential zoom rehearsals the week or two before this based on availability), and the performance will be on the evening of Tuesday, May 26th. Rehearsals and Performances will be held at La Val’s Subterranean Theater, 1834 Euclid Ave, Berkeley, CA 94709, just north of the U.C. Berkeley campus, within walking distance of downtown Berkeley BART.

Non-AEA/No Pay. Actors are considered volunteers. A consideration for expenses up to $50 is available, in accordance with AB5.
