In Noel Coward’s era the LGBTQIA+ community was largely forced underground. This production reimagines and asks: what if it hadn’t been? By re-envisioning the role of “Amanda” as “Andrew,” we cast new light … or toss some shade … on this classic comedy.

Character Descriptions

Elyot Chase (he/him, 30s-40s): Rich, handsome, and exceptionally witty, Elyot is the quintessence of Coward’s sophistication and cynicism. He lives for the moment and uses flippancy as a defense mechanism against emotional vulnerability. While charming, he can be petulant and even violent when his passions are roused. The epitome of the “A gay."

Andrew Prynne (he/him, 30s): Elyot’s former husband and intellectual equal. He Is spirited, independent, and handsome. Like Elyot he rejects conventional social norms and finds passion inextricably linked to conflict.

Sybil Chase (she/her, 23): Elyot’s new wife, portrayed as the "nice" English girl conventional, unimaginative, and innocent. She is a foil to Andrew, appearing shallow and eager to please. Despite her initial submissiveness, she reveals a capacity for manipulation and sharp-eyed jealousy.

Victor Prynne (he/him, 30-35): Andrew’s new husband who is stuffy, humorless, and deeply conventional. He views himself as a chivalrous protector but often comes across as pompous and patronizing.

Louise (she/her, any age): Andrew’s French-speaking maid who appears in the final act. She provides comic relief through her complete incomprehension of the chaotic, high-drama situation unfolding in the Paris flat.
