Position Summary
The Head of Facilities oversees the day-to-day maintenance, functionality, and safety of BATS Improv’s performance, rehearsal, and office spaces. This role ensures that facilities and technical systems are well maintained, supports rental operations, and coordinates closely with Fort Mason Center staff, vendors, and contractors. The Head of Facilities plays a key role in sustaining a safe, efficient, and welcoming environment for artists, staff, and audiences.
Location: Fort Mason Center, San Francisco, CA
Reports to: Managing Director
Classification: Hourly, non-exempt
Hours per wk: 10-15 hrs
Compensation: $35.75/hr
Key Responsibilities
Facilities & Maintenance Coordination
Coordinate routine and as-needed facility maintenance, serving as the primary point of contact with Fort Mason Center staff, vendors, and contractors.
Monitor the condition of theater, studio, and office spaces; maintain cleanliness and organization of the light booth, backstage, and loft areas.
Identify facility issues and arrange timely repairs or servicing.
Schedule, track, and follow up on maintenance and repair work to ensure completion and quality.
Maintain organized documentation of maintenance schedules, service history, warranties, and vendor contacts.
Oversee installation, maintenance, and servicing of facility systems, including HVAC/A/C and related infrastructure.
Technical Systems Oversight
Oversee maintenance and servicing of technical equipment, including lighting, sound, and related systems, by coordinating with qualified technicians and vendors.
Operations Support
Schedule staff, including day-of technical staff as needed, to ensure appropriate coverage for rentals.
Conduct client tours and document client questions and concerns for inclusion in the rental contract.
Attend designated events as a representative of BATS Improv, providing professional, welcoming customer service and ensuring a positive, hospitable experience for all participants and guests.
Planning & Asset Management
Support long-term planning for equipment replacement and facility improvements in collaboration with the Managing Director.
Implement strategies to recycle, repurpose, or sell unused equipment where appropriate.
Safety & Compliance
Help ensure compliance with safety standards and contribute to a safe, well-maintained environment for all facility users.
Serve as an on-call point of contact for urgent facility or technical coordination needs, with scope and scheduling to be determined by operational need.
Qualifications
Experience in facilities management, technical theater, or a related field.
Working knowledge of building systems, maintenance practices, and theater production equipment.
Strong organizational and project management skills with attention to detail.
Ability to deliver results on time and within budget.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with staff and external partners.
Ability to coordinate multiple vendors and prioritize tasks effectively.
Some evening and weekend availability required.
Interest in improv, theater, or live performance is a plus.
Physical Requirements
Ability to move throughout the theater, studio, office, backstage, loft, and booth areas.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb stairs or ladders as needed.
Ability to lift, carry, move, or transport equipment and supplies, typically up to 25 pounds, and occasionally more with assistance or equipment.
Ability to inspect facilities in low-light, noisy, or otherwise active production environments.
Ability to use hands and arms for computer work, documentation, tools, and basic equipment handling.
Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and in writing.
Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and limited on-call hours as needed.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Required Trainings
Complete all required onboarding and safety training before working independently.
