Subject: 18 Feb: African Americans Challenging Quaker Education

*Join us for a unique Black History Month Celebration Next Saturday, 18
February , 1 PM ET over Zoom Webinar The Prep School Negro (2012): African
American in Quakers Schools Joan Countryman and Filmaker André Robert Lee *

Next Saturday our festival-forum recognizes Black History Month with a
spotlight on not only the life of distinguished Quaker educator Joan
Countryman, but the trials, tribulations, and contributions of African
Americans across USA Quaker Education. We will be joined by both our
honoree, Joan Countryman, and award winning filmmaker André Robert Lee as
we screen his groundbreaking  film, The Prep School Negro (2012). This
personal documentary takes André on a journey back through time to reflect
on his experiences as an African American attending Philadelphia’s
Germantown Friends School, while also examining the thoughts and feelings
of other African American students in a couple of Quaker day-schools in
Philadelphia. We will be joined for a post-screening discussion by our
honoree, Joan; her granddaughter Emma Bracker, an alumna and teacher at
several Quaker schools, as well as the film’s director, André Robert Lee.
This is the second event in our 2023 Black Quaker Lives Matter Film
Festival & Forum, co-sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee.
