While I'm not sure I'll make the Milpitas run, I definitely like the
ideas you are throwing out Jim.

I'd also like to hike and fly bandito - maybe the sierras, tahoe or
even locally - such as from Mt Hamilton observatory to Ed Levin.

Great!
Re: Bandito. I want to try to see what's available to us in the
National Forests where it's legal. I do think that still leaves us a
lot of territory to explore without hitting Parks.

Jason has explored a lot of Tahoe routes. Any ideas on good places to
fly XC or even vol-biv in Tahoe?

yes, though I think Mt Hamilton may also work - spoke with Wally a few times about it - just needs some organization

Phil Green and I have been scouting and flying some fairly deep spots within
about a 50 mile radius of Tahoe, sort of 'stitching together' ares. We've
had some interesting experiences, best shared over a beer. As for the hike
and fly, I've sort of been obsessing for a while. At first I was very drawn
to the uber-challenge of a successful Sierra crossing and found that I'm
even more drawn to the pioneering of such a cool, yet un-flown, mountain
range.

We've been planning on a route that might take us a bit deep starting in the
Bridgeport area, actually, Mt Patterson, in May or June.

The way we have been doing this so far has been to keep the number of pilots
to 2 or 3, a dedicated chase, a route (direction really) that is confirmed
just prior to launch, after conditions are taken into consideration, and
then once again after launching. We've stuck to an agreement that we stick
together when flying deep. It's amazingly easy to misplace your buddy in
these mountains ;). I'll probably pick up a Spot but still, the buddy system
will probably remain just so we don't spend hours either hiking to an
accessible rendezvous or wasting good collaboration time for the following
day.

Any thoughts on how to organize an effort with a greater number of pilots? I
was very stoked to see Jim created this group and would love to hear what
ideas the creative-minds-that-would-be-attracted-to-this-board might have .

Best regards,

Jason Shapiro
