I'm from Australia living in the Bay Area for a while. I'm really keen
to participate in Mission hikes and to fly other local sites. I've got
a vague idea of what I need to fly these sites but would appreciate
some local advice about the rules/paperwork, and of course I'm really
keen to get to know guys, fly, hang out and have fun.
I've got an IPPI PG-4 rating. My understanding is I need a USHPA
membership, and then a USHPA rating. I'm not sure about the rating and
how to go about getting that. Also, there seem to be some restrictions
around individual sites with stickers/paperwork/etc that i'm also not
sure about.
Any help/advice would be great.
Zol
welcome to the bay area!
I had the same issue when arriving here 2 1/2 years ago.
For most places to fly you will need a USHPA membership, but the USHPA
rating is not so essential (I didn't get one). There are a few sites
that require the rating (like Tam) but most are ok with the equivalent
IPPI rating. For Mission and Ed Levin the IPPI P4 is sufficient. Once
you have your USHPA membership see http://www.wingsofrogallo.org/ to
become a member of the local club that administers those sites.
