Thanks, Jon and Timo for some route suggestions.
I propose that we start sharing routes in more detail. At the end of
the day, we should do this over some beers face-to-face, but in the
meantime since we in all different places (do you really live in
Cambria, Timo?), I suggest we share a little via google maps.
One way to do this is using google maps to detail a proposed route:
launch, direction of flight, end point and bail outs in between,
marking each in a saved map. Here's an example of what I did in
scouting out a route X-sierra (and yes, I am still working on doing
this, hopefully this or next September):

Here are some photos I took of some bailouts, etc from the air:

Natalia, this route ends up near Tollhouse and could end up close to Dunlap
Would those with a route in mind be willing to put in some time to
detail for the rest of us? Don't have to do what I did with google
maps, but some way to share what you have in mind would be helpful.
Any suggestions on improvements welcome, of course.
Let me know if you need help with Google maps or just look here:

And then maybe we'll be ready to make firmer plans over beers at the
first XCL meet in March?

Re: rescue on this route. Well, the intent is to not have to be
rescued. If you land in any of these bailouts, you're within half day
hike of a road. For the route I just sent, the furthest point out is
1 day maybe 1 night out before you hit trailhead. You DO need to go
prepared to hike (a few hours to all day), and for the parts on the
eastern end of the route, you need to be prepared to volbiv -- need
your own shelter, food, water purification, etc. to stay out a night.
If you land there injured, hopefully you're not alone and someone can
call for help. It would have to be helicopter rescue if you need
urgent medical care.

Your route is looking awesome, very nice recon work, as well!
Best regards,
Jason Shapiro
Yep I'm in Cambria, so the chances of getting to hike & fly with y'all
are slim. It sounds like a good group & lots of fun.
How high/long are the planned hikes? I make a point (usually) of
hiking our hill at Cayucos a couple times a week. It's 700' and about
30-40 min. depending on the gear I'm hauling. Usually it's about
45lbs. so I'm not a light weight flyer yet. I'd like to get a light
harness & fly the XC2 since it's light.
Thanks for starting the juices flowing with the group.
Is it just me, or do all the nicknames without real names cause
confusion? Maybe just me . . .

Mission is a one hour hike, about 1500'. Tam takes 2 hours to cover
the roughly 2000' elevation gain, mostly because the distance is
greater.
I hike with a Swing Reverse Connect and my regular UP Summit XC and
just enough water to make it up. That super minimal kit is about
35lbs. With vol/biv stuff enough for one comfortable night, it's
closer to 45-50 depending on what kind of steak I pack.
Jason, Phil Green, and I are looking to organize a weekend up in Tahoe
to invite those interested to try out a north Tahoe vol/biv route -- a
good weekender and he's been very kind to offer up the use of his
cabin there. More details will go out later, and any other
suggestions on routes for nice weekend vol/biv routes are welcome
Good point re: the nicknames. I'll try to keep it to full names. And
. . . if everyone has time, it would be nice to get everyone's full
names and perhaps one line intro (USHPA rating, where you live, what
you'd like to do for hike/huck or vol/biv, etc.) on the google group.
Or go incognito . . . .
