Dear Fellow Communicators in English,

Starting this week, members of Jose Carillo’s English Forum can now team up with me in doing My Media English Watch. This way, we can further widen the Forum’s dragnet for bad or questionable English usage in both the print media and broadcast media, thus giving more teeth to our campaign to encourage journalists to continuously improve their English. All you need to do is pinpoint every serious English misuse you encounter while reading your favorite newspaper or viewing your favorite network or cable TV programs. Just tell me about the English misuse and I’ll do a grammar critique of it; of course, if you are up to it, you can do the critique yourself and just post it on the Forum.

I’m also delighted to announce that the Forum has just opened a Readings in Language section. The selections range from light and humorous to serious and scholarly articles on reading, writing, listening, and speaking as well as on language teaching and learning.

There’s definitely much much more to learn and enjoy this week from the Forum, as you can see from the story lineup below:

THIS WEEK IN THE FORUM (September 26–October 2, 2009):

·        Special Forum: Should Faculty Hiring Give More Weight to Research Performance? (Or should it continue to give premium to teaching experience?)

·        My Media English Watch: Which is Correct: “Privileged Speech” or “Privilege Speech”? (It looks like the Philippines in particular is in a bind with this usage!)

·        You Asked Me This Question: What’s the Proper Tense for “Do” in the Negative of a Statement? (Remember the rule: It’s the helping verb that takes the tense!)

·        Essays by Jose Carillo: “Presently” is Future, Not Present (Unless you are in London visiting the Queen of England)

·        News and Commentary: Guidelines for Choosing Honor Students in RP Schools Revised (They must be among the top 10, with no subject grade lower than 80%)

·        Readings in Language: Adieu to Handwriting, Farewell to Computer Gobbledygook! (Five thought-provoking articles in all in this maiden selection!)

·        Social Advocacy: Possible Cultural Problem in Having a "First-Name-Basis" Environment (This might led to an invasion of privacy in the business setting)

·        Advice and Dissent: A Spirited Defense of the Revolution in Digital Communication (That computer technology is destructive is uninformed nostalgia)

·        Media Release: Jose Carillo’s “Give Your English The Winning Edge” Now Available (You deserve that edge after working long and hard to master English)

See you at the Forum!

With my best wishes,

Joe Carillo
