September 21, 1972, then-president Ferdinand Marcos issued
Proclamation 1081, declaring martial law over the entire Philippines.
It was considered to be the darkest days of the country. A curfew was
imposed, freedom of speech was curtailed and many common citizens were
threatened, arrested, incarcerated based on trumped up charges and/or
'disappeared'. But it was also the beginning of a new fight for
freedom. The patriotic spirit of many Filipinos was rekindled as they
denounced the abuses and fought back against the dark terror that
gripped the country.
Today, the Philippines finds itself in an eerily similar situation.
Are we going to let it happen again? Are we going to allow injustice
and oppression to take over the country? Are we going to submit to
our fears and give up our freedom? NO, NEVER AGAIN!!!
This Saturday, September 20, 2008, please join us in remembering the
dark days of martial law and declaring "never again!" with music and
spoken word.
