Hi folks,
I feel like I’ve seen this before, but now I can’t find it. Does anyone have a dataset with X2 locations? I’d like to make a map similar to this one, but I need the locations for the X2 lines. I’d rather not re-invent the wheel. Thanks!

Hi Rosie,
I don’t know if you’re an ArcGIS user, but I attached a shapefile of the River Kilometer Indices for the Bay-Marsh-Delta system. If you are not an ArcGIS user, I can extract the locations depending on which rivers you are interested in.
Regards,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Thanks! It looks like the “Sacramento River” values are the ones used for X2 then?

Hi Rosie,
I believe it is in any channel that’s part of the estuary. That is, as in the graphic you posted, it shows X2 in the San Joaquin River and other sloughs as well as the Sacramento River.

And, in D-1641, it defines X2 as:

Regards,
Jeff
Yes, X2 goes from anywhere to the Golden Gate, but the numbers in your shapefile for the San Joaquin river start at “1” with the confluence with the Sacramento River, so they won’t help with the location of X2, unless I add them to the Sacramento numbers.
For the graphic it was in the MAST 2015 report, page 6 Figure 1. Not sure if appeared earlier than that in another document.

In that case, I would say yes, the numbers for the San Joaquin should be added to the RKI location on the Sacramento River at the confluence of the San Joaquin River.
Yes before that the original was Figure 1 in Jassby et al 1995 in black and white.

In case you were interested, there’s also this figure that shows X2 in SJR and Sac River from Delta Stewardship Council https://viewperformance.deltacouncil.ca.gov/pm/salinity

Hi all,
In case anyone else wants to make a map of X2, I added the whole river kilometer dataset to the ‘deltamapr’ package:
https://github.com/InteragencyEcologicalProgram/deltamapr
I added two dataframes – P_RKI has the river kilometer indices for the entire bay-delta system. P_X2 is just the river kilometers along the Sacramento corridor from the Golden Gate (the dataset that is used for X2 on the Sacramento River). I didn’t include the X2 distances on the San Joaquin side because that gets a little more complicated.

Thank you, Rosie. Great addition 😊.
