Questions about Drones

Hi ~

I'm in the beginning phase of writing a short film that would include a drone and I have some questions:

1. How far can a personal drone fly from its pilot?

2. How long can it fly for?

3. What kind of surface does it need to take off from? Does it need a flat surface?

4. What is the audio like? Can a drone hear, for instance, what someone is saying if it hoovers close enough. Would a person have to shout?

5. Are there quiet drones – do all Drones make a lot of noise when they hoover?

6. Can/does a pilot wear glasses so it can see what the drone sees?

7. Can it maneuver through trees?

1) "visual line of sight", which is about 1,000 feet

2) 20 minutes

3) Flat is best but not required

4) No

5) They're all a bit noisy. But some are more quiet than others. The Yuneec Typhoon is pretty quiet

6) Yes, that can be done

7) Not by itself, but in the hands of an experienced pilot it can be flown manually through trees

The answer to these first three questions is: It depends. There is a
range from <$100 toys to >$20,000 big professional units, copter and
fixed-wing, all VERY different. You'll need to clarify which kind of
drone you're asking about.

Generally speaking, for a mid-range copter like the DJI Phantom, the
rotor noise is so loud that the default video capture doesn't even
include sound. Yes, a person would have to shout.

Almost all copters are very noisy at hover, but of course this sound
falls off rapidly with distance, so e.g. at 30 meters above you, it's
a relatively quiet sound. Fixed-wing can of course be almost silent.

This is called FPV (first-person video) and yes, it's a popular option
on many drone platforms.

Copters yes certainly, although depending on unit stability, wind,
pilot skill etc. it's advisable not to go too close. I personally
wouldn't fly within 5 meters of any tree, building, or anything else.

What I'm looking for is a drone that would be able to fly to where the pilot wouldn't be in the general area (close but not close enough to be in the immediate vicinity of the woman).

What type of drone would be able to fly that far and be quiet enough for her to talk to it? I could have it land if noise would be an issue.

Your next set of questions should include something of the set of:

- What permits/licenses/rules will I have to abide by for making a film that is considered a commercial use of a sUAS (small unmanned aerial system)?

- where would I be able to legally go to produce this film, since CA state parks, certain regional parks (EBRPD) and more, specifically have outlawed any motorized aircraft?

And so on.
