by 周威霖
在我讀過的書之中有一本叫 "The Letters of John and Abigail Adams" (Edited by Frank Shufflelton, Penguin Books, 2004), 我來摘錄其中幾封信的幾段 [括弧內的文字是我加上去的] :
[Philadelphia, 29 May 1775] "Colonel Washington appears at [the Continental] Congress in his uniform, and, by his great experience and abilities in military matters, is of much service to us."
[Ibid] "Oh that I was a soldier! I will be, I am reading military books. Everybody must, and will, and shall be a soldier."
[Philadelphia, 17 June 1775] "I can now inform you that the Congress have made choice of the modest and virtuous, the amiable, generous, and brave George Washington, Esquire, to be General of the American army, and that he is to repair, as soon as possible, to the camp before Boston. This appointment will have a great effect in cementing and securing the union of these colonies. The continent is really in earnest, in defending the country. They have voted ten companies of riflemen to be sent from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, to join the army before Boston. -------I hope the people of our province [指Massachussets] will treat the General with all that confidence and affection, that politeness and respect, which is due to one of the most important characters in the world. The liberties of America depend upon him, in a great degree."
[Philadelphia, 23 June 1775] "I have this morning been out of town to accompany our generals, Washington, [Charles] Lee, and [Philip] Schuyler, a little way on their journey to the American camp before Boston."
[Paris, Post 12 May 1780. The Science of Government it is my Duty to study, more than all other Studies Sciences: the Art of Legislation and Administration and Negotiation, ought to take Place, indeed to exclude in a manner all other Arts. I must study Politicks and War that my sons may have liberty to study Painting and Poetry Mathematicks and Philosophy. My sons ought to study Mathematicks and Philosophy, Geography, natural History, Naval Architecture, navigation, Commerce and Agriculture, in order to give their Children a right to study Painting, Poetry, Musick, Architecture, Statuary, Tapestry and Porcelaine."
