(英文教育/ 不諳形容詞 formosa, 只知名詞 Formosa)
我幾天前,對民進黨 29 年慶晚會演劇,感謝中志轉傳 YouTube
link,提到紙風車劇團加了一段“中國一定強“。我回應中言及:"(1) 'ilha
Formosa':葡萄牙航船十六世紀中葉航過台灣,高喊 ‘ilha
Formosa‘,並不像劇中說的「台灣美麗島」;他們只不過說了一個‘Formosa 島‘ 而已。葡萄牙話 ilha Formosa 的意思是 Formosa island ,不是 beautiful island。“
錯了!
感謝二位讀者 (Sebo 和 C.C.Chen) 指正,和 Gerrit of FAPA
回答我的問題。到昨天還有朋友間接提供 Coen Blaauw 的解釋(見下)。
有關 formosa / Formosa,
我之所以犯下語文上的錯誤,有幾個原因:
(一)我不曾學過葡萄牙語文,所以對 ilha Formosa
這二個字的理解,若沒有字典幫助,不算有根據,所知只算人云亦云。我靠 Google Translate, 竟被誤導了。可說全是 Google
惹的“惑“。
(二)我過去和大家一樣,以爲 IIha Formosa 就是美麗島。理由是,一向所看到的 Formosa,"f"
常常大寫,明明就是地名 (如台灣是 Formosa 和阿根廷北部的 Formosa 是一個省份)。我不曾想到 Formosa 會是形容詞。那麼,ilha
會是形容詞“美麗“ 的意思嗎?
"做學問要在無疑處有疑"(胡適),想知道,我就去查 Google Translate, 查到
Portuguese "ilha" 竟然是島嶼的意思。島嶼加上地名,當然我會結論 IIha Formosa
是“台灣島”,無關美麗不美麗。
(三)文法:我的想法,假如 IIha Formosa 是 "beautiful
Isle",那麼,葡萄牙文的形容詞,頭一個字母是大寫嗎?和法國文一樣,形容詞尾跟名詞嗎?我查 Google Translate,Google
只知其一,不知其二,英文 beautiful island 葡萄牙文是 bela ilha,導致我以訛傳訛 — 理由十足,但錯誤仍在。
(四)塞翁失馬,焉知非福:創下錯誤,學了不少。其中 Sebo 介紹的 http://translation.babylon.com/portuguese/to-english/formosa/
確實比 Google Translate 好。Coen Blaauw 的解釋,少爲人知,附錄信後。

Formosa means
"Beautiful" in Portuguese. CT. ("Hermosa" in Spanish. As in: Hermosa Beach,
CA.)
People say that the Portuguese named Taiwan "Formosa." But that is
not necessarily true. Portuguese king "Henry the Navigator" 4 March 1394 – 13
November 1460 had started overseas trade and exploration in the 1400's -- so
even before the Dutch, Spanish and British.
Therefore, the Portuguese
language was what the English language is today: wherever you were around the
world, people communicated in Portuguese. (Like we do with English today.)
Portuguese was the so-called "Lingua Franca."
And because the crews on
these -for instance- Dutch trade ships consisted of Germans, Walloons, Brits
etc.. the crew would speak Portuguese with each other.
So I
believe it was a Dutch captain who exclaimed "Ilha Formosa!" when his ship
sailed by Taiwan...
