US president-elect Donald Trump has described Taiwan as “a major issue for world peace” during a meeting with Akie Abe, the widow of late Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, Japanese newspaper the Yomiuri Shimbun quoted sources as saying in a report yesterday.
Trump met with Akie Abe on Dec. 15 at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where the two discussed the Russo-Ukrainian war and the situation in the Taiwan Strait.
During the meeting, Trump spoke on the implications for world peace of a potential Taiwan-China conflict, which “indicated his administration’s stance of placing importance on dealing with the situation in Taiwan,” the Yomiuri Shimbun said.
Trump also presented a book of photos in which he wrote the word “peace” to Akie Abe, for her to pass on to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, it said.
Trump has not yet met with Ishiba, but Japanese media have reported that Ishiba might visit the US next month before Trump’s inauguration to meet with him.
“We want to create an opportunity to exchange opinions as soon as possible and at a mutually convenient time,” Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Takeshi Iwaya was cited by the Japan Times as saying during a meeting on Thursday.
In a report on Dec. 13, Reuters cited a post on X by CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins in which she wrote that while Akie Abe “holds no government position, she has served as one bridge between her country and Trump. Trump has called her regularly to check in on her since her husband’s assassination.”
In other news, US-Taiwan Business Council (USTBC) president Rupert Hammond-Chambers said the US’ latest approved arms sale to Taiwan addressed needs for “tactical data-link system modernization and gun mounts for Taiwan’s ship programs.”
He was referring to an announcement by the US State Department on Saturday that US$265 million in arms sales to Taiwan were approved — the 19th arms sale to the nation during the administration of US President Joe Biden.
The sale includes 309 Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio Systems Variant 5 and assistance in integrating them on Taiwan’s Patriot and other missile defense systems, and F-16 Block 20 jets. The package also includes communications equipment and services to modernize the nation’s Advanced Tactical Data Link System.
The Biden administration’s “non-escalatory” approach to Taiwan’s arms sales and procurement is in line with the US’ overall strategy of supporting partners and allies, which also includes Israel and Ukraine, Hammond-Chambers said.
“While the constant flow of support has material and political benefits, it has, regrettably, been overly narrow in response to the totality of the threat posed by China’s military forces,” he said.
He commended former US assistant secretary of the bureau of political military affairs Jessica Lewis, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs Ely Ratner, and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs Jedidiah P. Royal for their “efforts to improve American national interest in and around Taiwan.”
“We can expect Taiwan President Lai Ching-te [賴清德] to be proactive in encouraging further growth in security assistance,” he said.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday (12/15/24) met with Akie Abe, the widow of assassinated former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump’s wife said.
The Trumps are believed to have hosted a private dinner for Akie Abe at the resort in Palm Beach, Florida, with Melania Trump posting an image to her X social media account of the three standing together smiling.
“It was a privilege to host Mrs. Akie Abe at Mar-a-Lago once again,” she wrote. “We fondly remembered her late husband, former Prime Minister Abe, and honored his remarkable legacy.”
Further details of the meeting were not immediately clear.
The dinner is the first known instance of a Japanese national meeting with the incoming U.S. leader following his victory in the Nov. 5 presidential election.
Abe’s meeting has raised some eyebrows for coming before that of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who was unable to meet Trump last month despite reportedly making a number of requests.
Trump’s team said at the time that no meetings with foreign leaders would take place before his January inauguration, citing the Logan Act, which bars private citizens from negotiating diplomatic matters with foreign governments.
However, in the weeks that followed, Trump has met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Japanese officials have said they are working to arrange a meeting between Ishiba and Trump “as soon as possible.”
Shinzo Abe, who was gunned down in 2022 while giving a campaign speech, was the first foreign leader to meet Trump after his stunning 2016 election defeat of Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, with the Japanese prime minister traveling to Trump Tower in Manhattan, New York, where he presented Trump with a $3,755 gold golf club as a gift.
That meeting was the first step in a relationship between the two leaders that helped Tokyo weather some of Trump’s unorthodox — and at times transactional — approach to the U.S.-Japan alliance.
Soon after Abe announced he would be stepping down due to a chronic illness in 2020, Trump called him his “closest friend” over the telephone, and “the greatest Prime Minister in the history of Japan” in a tweet posted shortly after the call.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump in 2022 lamented the former prime minister's assassination that year.
“Few people know what a great man and leader Shinzo Abe was, but history will teach them and be kind. He was a unifier like no other, but above all, he was a man who loved and cherished his magnificent country, Japan,” he wrote. “Shinzo Abe will be greatly missed. There will never be another like him!”

On the afternoon of May 20, President Lai Ching-te met with Abe Akie, the wife of late Prime Minister Abe Shinzo of Japan. During their meeting, President Lai expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Abe and his mother Abe Yoko for their contributions to enhancing the Taiwan-Japan relationship, as well as to Abe Akie for carrying on their connection with Taiwan and her commitment to bilateral cultural exchange. The president said he looks forward to Taiwan and Japan continuing to work together to uphold peace, stability, development, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. He also expressed hope that the friendship between Taiwan and Japan and the virtuous cycle between our countries can become models for the global community.
In his remarks, President Lai recalled that when he met Mrs. Abe Akie in Taiwan last July, he said he hopes that she can visit Taiwan often and can see Taiwan as her second home. He then welcomed Mrs. Abe to Taiwan to attend his and Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao’s inauguration and participate in Taiwan’s momentous democratic event.
President Lai expressed his respect for both former Prime Minister Abe and his mother Abe Yoko. The president also expressed his condolences on their passing, as well as his gratitude for their work to strengthen the Taiwan-Japan relationship. He also thanked Mrs. Abe Akie not only for visiting Taiwan on her husband’s behalf and carrying on their connection with Taiwan, but also for her commitment to our bilateral cultural exchange and for taking over the role of honorary president of the Japan-Taiwan Homebound Sakura Cultural Exchange Foundation after the passing of Abe Yoko .
President Lai said that Mrs. Abe’s high regard and support for Taiwan mean a lot to the Taiwanese people, adding that the bilateral friendship facilitated by Prime Minister Abe continues to grow. On the earthquake that struck Taiwan last month, President Lai stated that the Japanese government, parliament, local autonomous entities , and members of civil society all expressed timely concern for Taiwan and raised funds for those affected by the disaster. For this, he expressed thanks to everyone in Japan on behalf of the people of Taiwan.
Noting that former Prime Minister Abe dedicated his life to upholding the values of freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights, President Lai stated that the concept of a free and open Indo-Pacific pioneered by the late prime minister has become a common strategic goal of democratic countries the world over and will have a far-reaching influence over future international developments.
President Lai said that Taiwan will continue to work with Japan to uphold peace, stability, development, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and will strive to have the friendship between Taiwan and Japan and the virtuous cycle between our countries become models for the global community.
Mrs. Abe then delivered remarks, congratulating President Lai on assuming office and thanking him for the invitation to attend his inauguration ceremony. Having had the pleasure of hearing President Lai’s powerful inaugural address that morning, she said that she hopes that President Lai will stay healthy and make further contributions to Taiwan and the world at large.
Mrs. Abe recalled that when former Prime Minister Abe passed away, then-Vice President Lai promptly came to Japan to offer his condolences. She expressed her appreciation for this gesture and said that she is sure former Prime Minister Abe’s spirit took comfort from this sentiment.
Mrs. Abe then thanked Taiwan for erecting a statue of her late husband. She said she looks forward to acting as a bridge between Japan and Taiwan and repaying Taiwan for its kindness.

"A Taiwan contingency is a Japan contingency," declared Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan. "It is also a contingency for the Japan-U.S. alliance," he followed.
The defense of Taiwan or a fight over Taiwan is a "4-in-1 war" or a "all-for-one-and-one-for-all war."
Taiwan is not dragging America and other liberal democracies into a war. The incoming or ongoing invasion of Taiwan is exactly the first operation of a global conquest agenda of the imperialist, expansionist, revanchist, and evil Empire of China.
To the people of Taiwan, it's a war of life and death, self-rule and submission, freedom and slavery, and dignity and humiliation.
For the United States, it's a war to safeguard "Pax Americana" ( "U.S.-led Liberal World Order"), "Free and Open Indo-Pacific," and, according to the Taiwan Relations Act, America's security, strategic, political, and economic interests in Taiwan.
As far as Japan is concerned, it's a war to keep its major sea lanes or maritime lifelines safe.

安倍昭惠這次到美國，是從西班牙去的。因為她是「日台國際櫻交流會」榮譽會長，在西班牙巴斯克自治區出席台灣昭和櫻種植活動。這項活動是她與台灣友人種植來自台灣的五株昭和櫻。事畢她就從西班牙飛赴美國。她在海湖莊園不可能不談到自己是從西班牙飛過來，並談及她與台灣的友誼，她應該也會談到安倍的經典名句「台灣有事就是日本有事」。根據《安倍晉三回憶錄》安倍說「川普比我想像的謙虛得多。」他的團隊成員告訴安倍「他是很好的聽眾。」安倍說：川普常常靜聽他的說法。
