Seeing everyone's heated bed last Wednesday made me want to get one. I also still need to add a Z endstop flag, which would make me need to better level out the bed. Since it's a Sells Mendel, I'm using the tacky printed springs, and the nuts and washers from three of the four bolts that go through the springs have already rattled off, so it's just going to be a nightmare to readjust the bed. Not to mention that I have a metal bed, so it sucks the heat out of the print. And I'm tired of blue tape, which I keep scratching through, and I'd like a nice flat print on the bottom. So I really want a heated bed.

It needs to fit on a standard Sells Mendel, and it would be nice to be a kit, but isn't completely necessary. It should be a glass bed.

Any suggestions?

Read for general info. Also see "mounting" section for details on the cork feet mounting method.

I used this:

You can get Borosilicate glass from Todd on the list, I believe. He said he ordered a bunch. Or use window glass, but there are varying opinions on whether or not it will break. I used borosilicate to be safe.

Optional:

I also used Kapton tape to attach things like the thermistor, so that might be good.

There's some other details you'll want to work out, but that should get you started.

Okay, I'm getting that PCB for free, so I'll use your plan. I don't want to use window glass, so I'll talk to Todd. Would I have to cut the glass myself, or does he already do that?
Also, what's the Cable-Tray Rated Continuous-Flex Multiconductor Cable for?
P.S. What's the Sells Mendel standard bed size?

Thanks for the response!

The glass should be already cut to size. Todd bought it for repraps.
The high temp cable is for wiring the PCB and thermistor, but any wires you have around are probably fine. I'm not entirely happy with how stiff they are anyway.
As far as the size of the bed, I've got no idea, you're the one who owns one. ;-)

Okay, do you happen to know the size of the glass Todd has? Was it made for a Prusa or Mendel (or other?)

Hi Keavon,

I have a link to glass in our store below. The size of the glass is 3.3mm Borofloat glass 8.425" X 7.784". That size should be fine for a Mendel Max or a Mendel Prusa. It is measured to fit a PCB Heatbed MK1. If you are using this head bed or something similar it should work fine.

Thanks,
Lis

Oh *theres* your store! I was looking at 3dbots.com and it was not helpful.

Yeah... It looks like they haven't paid their hosting bill.  Hopefully they let the domain expire so we can grab it.

Okay, I'll probably get that. Can somebody tell me the dimensions of a standard Sells Mendel bed? I can't find it anywhere.
Also, will I need holes for the mounted bed?

Looks like 200mm x 200mm.

Not sure I totally understand your question. The PCB Heatbed has M3 size holes in each corner. I use these holes to mount the heat bed to an aluminum plate underneath. I put the glass on top and use binder clips to secure it to the heated bed.

That's not the size of the bed, though. That's the print area. The spacing between the bolts is apparently "218.2mm apart along the x axis, and 124mm apart along the y axis." according to http://reprap.org/wiki/Mendel_materials_preparation#Thick_sheet
I also measured it, and that's about true.

I recently wrote detailed instructions to build a Mendel Prusa (with a couple of minor 3D-Bots modifications). The link is below. Part 11 is about assembling the heated print bed. You might also want to check out Part 6 about assembling the Y Axis to see how I use the metal mounting plate.

Lis

P.S. I have gotten feedback from several people who have used these instructions. However, if anyone else is doing a new build I would love more feedback.

Lis, I have a Sells Mendel, not a Prusa. The reason I'm asking about the size of a Sells Mendel bed is because I need a glass sheet the size of a Sells Mendel bed. I can't find the actual dimensions of the bed online. I just measured the lasercut acrylic bed I used to use (before I melted through it), and it's exactly 23 cm along the y axis of the printer, and 23.2 cm along the x axis. That's also the dimensions I measured in the AutoCAD file of the bed.
Okay, so it's 230 x 232. So I need a sheet of glass that size.
I can't seem to find any online, so I may cut my own.

Does it need to be exactly that size? I know on my Ultimaker, the build volume is 8.2" square but I just used 9" square glass, which fit fine.

I suppose 9" by 9" is close enough. I'll try to find it somewhere, or I'll try cutting 230 x 232.

That's a good idea. How thick should it be, or how thick is yours?

I wanted 3/16" but that wasn't in stock in LA so I got 1/8". It survived a small fall on concrete so it seems plenty strong.

Can you just put it in your standard Public folder instead of making the individual file public? I'd like to see how you mount the heated bed!
Thanks!

I've been using glass I bought from Orchard. Something like $8 for 12" x 24". They'll cut it for you for no charge. I got two beds out of it. Mounted using binder clips like Lis. No issues with breaking for the last 3-4 months.
