Hi All,

I spent most of the long weekend and some of the week after in unsuccessfully  trying to use 123d Catch to capture 3d scans using sequence of images from a camera.
I was intrigued to see in the last meeting Mathew's modified Kinect 3D scanner. He's demonstrated very fast and clean 3D scans in real time.
The Kinect was modified to decrease the distance from the scanned object and to eliminate the color imaging capture. He was using lenses from reading glasses for that.
After the meeting I went and ordered a used Kinect sensor out of EBAY.

Mathew,
what power eyeglasses you use?
what software did you use?
Did you try the free software SCENECT from FARO?

I think he said 2.5 power.

http://skanect.occipital.com/            is the software..

Primesense Carmine             is the hardware..    Mathew said they don't make it anymore..   but Kinect is supported, so its OK.!

http://skanect.occipital.com/download/          bottom of the page shows all the compatible hardware..

Do you have a link to the mod?

I can find a link later, but simply, tape 2.5 reading glasses over the outside lenses, with the center of the lenses over the center of the camera lenses.

My Prime Sense Carmine is the near-mode version, so a regular kinect may give different results.  Kinect for Windows supports both regular and near mode, and is USB powered, while the regular kinect requires USB and a wall wart.

And the PrimeSense uses OpenNI 2.2 drivers, while the Kinect uses the m$ drivers from the Kinect SDK.

The Kinect SDK can also capture STLs for free.  I've used 1.7, but I think it's up to 2.0 now....

Hi Mathew,
Yesterday I've finally got the Kinect, the power supply adaptor, and I also got the zoom. I did initial experimentation with Scenect, Skanect, and ReconstructMe, with no good results. Are you planning to come to todays' meeting? Maybe you can bring your setup so we can experiment some.
Also, you've mentioned that "The Kinect SDK can also capture STLs for free". Is there an application coming with the Kinect SDK that will do that?

Thank you,
Zohar

i used Kinect SDK 1.7 a while back; it's up to 2.0 now.  It contains an app called Fusion which can scan an object or a room and export an STL.

If you got a commercial zoom lens, that won't help.  I have reading glasses on a Carmine Near-Mode.  Kinect for windows is the only 1st-gen kinect that does near mode.  I'm not sure about the newer Kinect One for Windows.

I'm using 2.5 reading glasses from a dollar store (wallgreens wants $27!).  You can find info on that hack online.

I'm vacationing on the east coast, right now, but I rarely to South Bay meetups.  i live in SF, and don't have a car.  zipcar makes a meeting for around $60 for me, which I've done.

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for your replay. I will try the Kinect fusion.
Do you know why the commercial zoom will not work? Is it different magnification? Will it work to a different distance than the glasses mod?
Also what is the near mode? I though you are just using the lenses. Does the sensor itself need to work in a different mode for close scanning?

the Carmine comes in both regular mode an near mode.  regular focuses from 1-8M, while near mode can focus down to 60CM.  in my case, the carmine is set to near mode.  in the case of Kinect for Windows (not the xbox kinect), near mode is a checkbox within the Kinect SDK.  the Kinect for Xbox 360 cannot to near mode, so the closest it can focus is 1M.  Fine for rooms, but you'll lose detail on busts or smaller.

I don't know anything about the Zoom mod, but I have read the zoom for gaming doesn't work for scanning.  the reading glasses give the Kinect a wider field of view, while zooming would make it narrower.

And the new Kinect One for Windows is due In July, I believe.  i haven't read anything about the new one at all.  It is supported by ReconstructMe, but I bought Skanect.
