My sheaves at base of mast are seized,  the pin will not budge. Any ideas how to remove? Also the size and source to get replacement pins and sheaves ?   Thanks

We had the same issue.

Drop the rig, remove the shoe from bottom of the mast. If you can get access to a hydraulic press that is best.  Set the shoe in the press, use the press to begin driving the pin out. Apply a small amount of pressure to start and use a torch to heat the shoe around the pin. Take your time. If you drive the pin too hard before it is able to move you may crack the shoe.

Ours took close to 20 minutes of heating, increase pressure, heating, increase pressure, repeat.  Not sure on replacement pins and shelves. Maybe contact Buzz Ballenger. We created new pins from rod stock. We’re able to reuse the existing sheaves.

Hello Joel,
I had the same issue. I had Easom rigging disassemble the mast shoe (likely not as cost efficient as David's method).
The seizing up is often caused by fibres from the halyards getting caught / wrapped around the pins.
Maybe you can get away with cleaning them after you disassemble, rather than needing new ones.

Hi all,

I just went through this exercise this spring. Based on guidance from David, I dropped the mast and attempted to remove the shoe/base, but found that the screws holding the base to the mast were seized as well. Using a handheld impact driver, I was able to finally get two of the screws to back out, and the other two sheared off to allow me to remove the base. I sent the base down to Buzz Ballenger, and he was able to remove the seized sheaves and pins and rebuild the base for about 3 hours of labor, plus materials. I finally have everything put back together now and all is working great!
